Hey everyone, the rig I am talking about is in my sig.
I just received this system a few days ago, and while trying to run battlefield bc2 I get like 20-25 fps using fraps on the lowest settings possible.

This is obviously not right, as notebookcheck has the 6970hd as around 50fps on max settings. And yes, I am using the gpu and not the integrated graphics.

Can someone help me figure out why this is the case? I disabled powerplay and set antialiasing and filtering to "let application decide" in the catalyst control center as well.

Are you running the latest graphics drivers?
Are your Windows power management settings on 'High Performance'?
Make sure your laptop is plugged into the wall.

You really can't trust Notebookcheck very much. You should be getting better fps than that though.

Are you recording with FRAPS as well?

If so, that could be part of the problem.

Nope, I get the same horrible framerate with nothing running in the background. Also, when I use msi afterburner to monitor the gpu usage it stays at 100% usage the entire time during the game, even on the lowest settings.

    6970M Driver

There's the AMD driver (its not really 1MB, but this will begin the process).

You can also use the Dell driver if you want. Don't know how drastic the difference is.

And yes, if you're recording movies with FRAPS, your performance is going to plummet. If you're just using it to tick fps, then you're only going to take a tiny, unnoticeable hit.

Ok after running hwinfo32 I think I may have found the issue.

The clock speeds are stuck at 100mhz and 150mhz for the memory. Isn't this wayyyy low?

    here is a pic : hwinfo32

After reinstalling the drivers, the core clock caps at 400mhz. Still can only get 17fps on high settings in BFBC2

Tried this and no dice. After talking to support for 90 minutes I still couldn't figure it out. I reinstalled the ati driver and now I can get the gpu clock to 400mhz, but it refuses to go higher.

Im out of ideas here guys. What can I do?

When PowerPlay is disabled, it caps the clocks at 300/400. Humor me. Try again. Open CCC, click on Power, click on PowerPlay, check "Enable PowerPlay" and assure that it is set to Maximize Performance when plugged in. Why would you disable PP in the first place?

Damn. Still doesn't go over 400mhz core and 900mhz memory. urggghhhhhhh! I made sure that it was set at maximum performance for both plugged in and on battery for good measure. Also to answer your question the only reason I disabled power play in the first place was to try to fix the issue haha.

Well, that's progress at least. Is your PowerPlan set to Balanced or High Performance?

High Performance. I feel like there is something minor which is capping the clock at 400mhz. But what is it.... haha

I dont own the R3 version, but I had a similar issue with BFBC2 on my R2 where the game would only have like 10fps running on everything lowest of low. I found a post on another website saying that its to do with 'Stealth-Mode'. I don't know if the R3 has this or not but restart your machine, when you load into Windows and into your desktop, hit the button top right of your keyboard that looks like a speed-o-meter and it should say something like Stealth-Mode access enabled. Click Yes, then in the notification area is should say Full Power Mode Enabled. Restart your machine and hopefully this will fix it.

The r3 doesn't have stealth mode :( I don't know if it is a driver issue at this point because I've tried uninstalling/cleaning up the old driver and reinstalling a number of times.

Actually, I have a service tech coming out today for an issue with the motherboard not charging the battery. Do you think these issues might be related? Like the motherboard is keeping the gpu in a low power or idle mode no matter what I throw at it?
Im beginning to think this might be a hardware(most likely motherboard) issue, not just a software/driver issue.

    Try this:

    1. Unplug the power cable to the laptop

    2. Remove the Battery

    3. Hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds

    4. Plug in the battery and power cable

    5. Log into Windows and see if its charging.

If this works, its due to power discharge IIRC. I had this with my R2 the day I got it.

Ive tried the battery drain, no luck!. Im thinking that since my battery is stuck at (0%, plugged in, not charging) there is some sort of throttling threshold that is being tripped that won't allow the anything to work at max performance. I guess I'll find out on tuesday when the tech comes to replace the mobo
