One reason I decided not to buy the Alienware M17x R3 was because of the change from M17x. No longer does it have decent vents so even if I used a laptop cooler it can only blow air into the fans' vents. No vents for the cpu or gpu or memory.
-
? No vents for CPU and gpu? Pretty sure I have one for each. Not memory though.
-
Well seeing as the R2 has 3 fans with 4 vents and the newer revisions of the R3 have 2 fans and 3 vents, I think all is proportional.
Why do you think they are horribly designed? -
I do not think he knows what he is talking about... I've actually seen better improvement in cooling compared to the m17x r2...
-
The memory does not need ventilation. It's not performance memory that requires extra voltage to run tighter timings.
-
Well my gpu running furmark does not go past 65 so that's pretty good for me.

Playing games and overclocking the 460m I never go above 70C.....
I've personally have had no problems with cooling. [}: -
.......... M17xr3 runs a lot cooler than the R2, so no need for all those vents, although I would have preferred side vents rather than undervents.

yes the r2 has more vents, but the r3 actually runs cooler. actually the newer one with 6990 and 580 has an extra vent for the gpu.
-
Probably because it needed it more. More heat plus 2nd gpu. Temps even with video oc on the r3 are usually very good unless someone assembled it wrong.
-
Yeah the R2 had CF and SLI so it's understandable. If you want more vents, just go for the M18x.
-
Newer tech runs cooler. The older i7 and core2 series ran much hotter which needed more cooling.

Exactly LVNeptune just said what I was going to say. The R2 has excellent cooling btw. Sure there where issues and it required us fiddling with it a bit, but does not mean it does not have a great cooling system.
Horribly designed vents
