I need some help guys. I plugged my iPhone into the laptop the guy beside me has (white MacBook) and my phone shows up in his airport thing and he can get online.

I just got my r3 a few hrs ago and it's frustrating to say the least I can't even do the first thing I try.

To add insult to injury my friend just said to me " seen those Mac vs pc commercials?" .... Grr

1: You need to iTunes installed on your computer
2: You need to have tethering on your AT&T wireless account. It's 25$ extra a month
3: You need to turn on tethering in your setting on the iphone
4: While tethering I disable wireless and/or unplug my wired connection. That's just me though.

Ok I'm probably missing step 1 there.. I don't have iTunes installed yet. I received it while I was shoveling snow and didn't have time to quickly install iTunes or even vlc .

    iTunes mandatory?

I do have tethering I actually have 2 plans for 6.5 gb each I just use 6.5 then swap the sim for the rest of the month. If I need iTunes that explains it. I don't get any pop ups or anything when I connect it except for the file that opens and shows the phone etc

Yes. Because it installs the apple drivers which allow the iphone to be recognized as a modem. When tethering is turned on in your iphone settings of course.

Lol I will I was really sad to see the chip flaw news indeed. I'll be keeping it 29.9 days to see if the 2820 is worth its premium :)
