    I just purchased a dell alienware m17x.
Would it run CAD software such as autocad and Rhinoceros fine? Anyone have
    any experience?

I am/was using workstation class computers..oldies like the Dell M90 and a boxxtech desktop. Just wondering how such software would run minus a workstation class graphics card (quaddro/firegl).

Also, does anyone find the glossy screen extremely bad for doing work?

    Sincerely,
    Nappy

The glossy screen is sometimes bad for editing color intensive work. Just does not get the right accuracy.

CAD softwares should "run." And run quite smoothly with powerful cards. I tried some, nothing intensive though, on my dual 5870s. They ran fine.

Nappy, just out of curiosity, wouldn't a M6600 be more fit for what you want to use the laptop for?

    Geo and Dellienware,

Thanks for your feedback! That's awesome that you can convert a 6990M to a firepro M8900.

I am a bit worried about the glossy screen as i do a lot of photoshop..why is it bad for editing color intensive work though? I haven't used a glossy display for ages...

Essentially, the experience is that my room tends me to quite bright and also in the library where I do some editing. Once, I brought back my work done from the R2 and put it up on the IPS Dell monitor. The color difference was noticeable.

I must note that the difference could have been due ts RGB LED in R2 and the calibrated IPS screen being different.

The light "reflected" off of the gloss finish "washes up" the color. It is hard to describe.

I have a curiosity like Katalin. Unless you game more than editing, M6600 might be better. The machine is truly reliable.
