Typically, I go for business machines. But due to price issues, I may have to go for the M17x with the WUXGA RGBLED screen for work.

    1. How gaudy is the M17x? How is it for programming etc (keyboard quality)?

    2. How is the build quality? Say compared to the dell precision M6500?

How does it compare to the 17" MBP? That is another option.

I dont game, I would be getting it just for the WUXGA RGBLED.

    1. Its not gaudy one bit.For programming it's like any system depends on cpu it's your choice .M17x R2 comes with many options of cpu.As far as keyboard it's fine but on mine there is a bit of flex but keys feel good.

    2. Build quality it's tremendous in comparison to M6500 which i have used on 2 occasions the M17x is better, its built like a tank.No idea how it compares to MBP as not seen.As far as screen's go on Laptop's its bloody good but i believe you can find better on other business machines.
I am a 42 year old freelancer so i have to do lots of work on my M17x & its a dream nothing has ever been been a problem from CAD to video editing etc etc & i have a i7 620M dual core .I personally would never go back to anything else.Best Laptop i have ever owned 100%.

    Thank you Sauce.

What is this "R2" that people are talking about? I only see a M17x on dells websites...

I used the M6400 (which has the same build quality as the M6500).
How is the build quality on the M17x better? I know that the M17x is 1.5kg heavier --- how much of that has gone into making the laptop sturdier?

You'll be programming in style with an M17x :) Build quality is fantastic. Had it for a little less then a year now, and only very small smudges are on the lid. And I have Lunar Silver, so its barely noticeable. Its a strong laptop that wont break easily.

The "R2" is the newer versions of the m17x the once with i processors so basicly the "R1" isn't available for new sell except maybe in outlets or used items. We have both a M6500 and a m17x at work here and I must say that the m17x is built really like a sturdy thing you almost can drop and when it hits the floor its not the system your conserned about, ofcourse I don't recomend trying thou ;)

Thr R2 features the I Core CPUs, the r1 has the Core duo / Quad options.

I had the M6400 and the M17x The M17 wins hands down IMO.

The one nice feature of the precision line was the buisness level support from dell.

If you have a need for a docking station then I say the M6500, but if not the M17x. I just recently sold my M6500 for a M17X since I game more and its by far an improvement over Alienware's i have used in the past.

That's probably because it's really the successor to Dell's high end notebook lines. Which to me is a good thing, because I always liked those better than what the real Alienware was doing-seemed like better looking, better build quality, etc. (although maybe that's just my perception...but anyway I used to be a huge Dell fan).

I program C++ in my spare time, and i have to say that my m17x is one of the best computers i have ever used. it has the full keyboard with the # pad so that is really good. i like to be in the dark while on the computer so the LED keyboard is really nice for that.

i doubt you can find a laptop that can compile programs fast either. even large visual C++ programs.
