I picked up a G73SW-3DE last week from Amazon to see how I liked the whole 3D thing. I intended it to be a 30 day return as I was considering this as a short term test laptop before I possibly ordered an R3.

3D is definitely cool but it's no longer at the top of my list of must haves. I do however LOVE the 120hz matte screen!!

The Asus did surprise me on how quiet that chassis is even when taxing out the 460M in games. It is unbelievably quiet compared to my M17x-r2.

So how is the fan noise on the R3 with the 460m and with the 6970m?
I will get my db meter and measure the Asus tonight for a reference point.

How loud are the fans? How often do they seem to go to full load?

-Dr. J: "Loud only upon boot up."

-Knocturne: "Surprisingly quiet for this level of performance. Not as loud as you'd think."

-usshellfire: "had a hard time figuring out if the fans were even runnings. barely noticable under idle. and if you are gaming with your speakers on, you wont even hear the fans."

It's a very quiet system. Much quieter than the M17x-R2.

Notebookcheck says the fan can get as loud as 48Db, now that was with furmark, so i doubt you would get near that. The R2 was 52Db. I don't know how accurate Notebook check is since another R3 review site said it got around 3XDb, not sure if they were using furmark. so i'll say somewhere in the 30Db range if you're playing games.
