Just picked up a MX17 r2 920m 5870 crossfire That is completely silent in normal conditions, but ramps up like a jet fighter when playing any game, and yes I can hear it when playing the game with high volume. Question is this normal, as I replaced a Asus RW73sw that made no noise at all.

    Hi Spydweb,

I have exactly the same spec and yes its normal.

Now what i suggest which can help is if you get yourself a laptoop cooler. The cooler assists with cooling the laptop and you will find things will quieten down a bit.

If your Stateside i can suggets the NZXT Cryo, as im stuck in the UK i cannot find anywhere that has them and had to settle for a Coolermaster piece of junk.

Anyways its normal and there isnt much we can do about it :(

I had that problem with my R1 and found that doing a deep cleaning brought it back to normal.

I think the problem is more related to a minor incompatibility with the 6970m's.

    PMSL, nice upgrade there then.

Do they generate that much heat? or is it due to changes in the way temps are reported/monitored?

also enabling v-sync helps a lot (especially with older games).
with v-sync u fix the fps to a limit and the gpus do not have to "work" that hard.

i use it in almost every game because of the fan noise...

    Thanks :)

They actually run cooler than my 4870's. I think it either has something to do with a vbios that isn't 100% compatible or something to do with using two 6970's that are made from different manufacturers.
