My R4 only came with 1 year warranty, which expires in october. I phoned up dell today and was told the following prices:

    1yr extension £160
    2yr extension £300
    3yr extension £500

However they are currently doing an offer for this week...

    2yr £228
    3yr £393

I've told him I'll think about it, as I've got nothing to compare these prices to. When I owned my dell xps m1730 I got an awesome deal on 3 year extended warranty for £150! (although that was 4 years ago now, lol)

So does anyone think these prices are any good? What have you paid for extending it?

I think I paid about $400 or so to extend for two years, which paid for itself after two service calls for a faulty motherboard and subsequent replacement of my video card. I'll never own an Alienware without a warranty again; next time, however, I'll pay to have it extended right off the bat.

Hi, I paid £165.00 last month for an extra year.

Dell are in trouble right now with poor results and a potential change of ownership and direction. They are not even publishing projections so I think a year on year renewal, although more expensive, is the wiser choice ATM ;)

Interesting, I didn't know dell were experiencing difficulties!

Warranty is absolutely essential on these laptops (already had problems!) so i'll probably take your advice and just get an extra year for now.

Have a look at this: Michael Dell has been trying to purchase back the company for a while and the markets are not happy.
BBC News - Dell posts 79% fall in profits amid takeover battle

    Good luck ;)

Well, with a turnover like that and profits still healthy, I don't think dell are in danger of going under just yet ;-)

Now would probably be a good time to buy shares!

Probably true but with the threat of dropping the PC market it will be a very different company :(. I'd like them to be successful in the home market but it seems to be the least profitable area so what will get cut first??

If one did not purchase any warranty at time of initial purchase of AW Laptop what is the deadline for extending it?

In the UK it cannot be extended at all (complete care). Recently went through all this with dell. The US T's&C's state renewal is available, the UK one specifically excludes it, apart from at initial purchase. You can renew the basic coverage but I am not aware of any 'grace' period. They emailed me twice, one as a reminder and another saying it was about to expire and to renew before the date - basic coverage without accidental only.

What's the difference between complete and basic care? As long as basic care includes parts and labor and brand new replacement if problem persists.

It's the accidental portion, you still get in-home coverage. If you did not purchase accidental originally you already have the same coverage.

They always reserve the right to use refurbished parts, it depends on availability in the specific country. US gets a lot more refurbished parts since there are a lot more of them around. Replacement of a complete unit is totally at their discretion and one of the things that has kept me with AW. Hoping it is not going to change...

Anyone know the time period before warranty cannot be extended? I.e. 1 month or 3 months expiry of warranty?

Update: I just asked Dell UK and they confirmed "NBD with Premium Phone Support" can be extended the day before your warranty expires. But Accidental Damage cannot be extended.

When i am extending i am getting quoted without VAT, last time (1 year ago i paid 100GBP for 1 yr extension)

I think i will extend it for further 2 years since they have it on offer :)

you can extend it anytime for up to 5 years from the laptop being manufactured, you have to be within the warranty period to extend, sometimes they will allow couple of days late.....

Update: i just extended my warranty for 2 Years total £190.27
And this will be my last warranty upgrade for this laptop since i reached 5 years by upgrading now.....

As mentioned, you can extend hardware support right up until your original/extended warranty expires. The main caveat is that you have a live warranty on your machine to do so. I have seen examples where some lucky folk have been permitted to take out extended warranty on machines with expired warranty that have even had issues. That would be up to Dell's sole discretion and you would be fortunate for them to renew a warranty on an expired machine that is having difficulties.

Accidental Damage cannot be extended, as that is done through a separate insurer, at time of purchase, generally included in complete care. In the UK, it's London General Insurance who underwrite the accidental damage portion of Dell warranty: http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/services/uk/en/CompleteCare_Accident_Damage_UK.pdf

As for pricing, it's almost always best to haggle with a rep. You will often find that there is 'wiggle room' on the price, because on the whole, most warranty premium is pure profit - until a claim is made, which is probably less often than you would think. Easy money for the seller, but as with all insurers, they always try and 'get out' of honouring many claims in the small print. Ensure you read it all is my best advice.

Also, regarding AD, if you check your home insurance policy, many of them allow/include AD at home, and for a premium, will even cover your expensive items away from the home. Should you wish to have your beast protected for AD and cannot extend via Dell, check out this option - it's not as expensive as you might think.

In Italy the prices for the extention are: 266,20 € for 1 year and 508,20 € for 2 years (both with vat included); no hope for discount :(
I think I will keep my money
