    Hi All,

How much does your battery last ?

Mi M17xR2 is 2 months old and battery last only 1 hour (trottlestop enabled with 12x multiplier and powersave option enabled), according to HWinfo the Wear Level is 10.4%

    is this normal ?

I got 17% wear even though I barely use it in battery mode. :(
I thought to take off the battery when not in use, but my laptop really looks weird.
Right now it gives me around 1 hr 10 min under 9400 GPU, LCD mid lit and other normal.

Yup that is very normal for both battery life and wear and tear %. Mine is roughly about the same on all my M17x's. I find that if I drain the battery all the way till it dies my wear % always increases slightly. Like 1% or around that each time. Over long term use though the battery will keep going down and end up not being able to hold its full 100% capacity charge.

I like to keep it in there as a UPS though + i move the notebook around quite a bit from time to time. So it is handy to have 1hr or so battery life.

    Cheers. :)

Yeh the wear amount can go quite high after while even though you don't use it much. The battery in notebooks, for the most part need to be actually used. Even if they are not being used they will still slowly but surely wear down and die. So the best way to prolong them is to discharge them down to about 50% charge and then store it in a dark cool place.

However most of us like to keep the battery plugged in and use it as a UPS. So theres not too much we can do really. Just make sure to use it from time to time. Like once a week or so. + don't use the battery till it hits a very low% as that will wear and tear it more often than not. Once in a while it is good to completely drain the battery as well. Usually like once a month or once every 2 months depending on overall battery usage.

    Cheers. :)

My wear level jumperd from 10% to 17% wen I did that battery calibration thing.
I don't know if it happened only with me but I am done calibrating until I get some real stat that it actually helps battery.

Yeh thats true actually. I found the same thing happens to me. So I try not to let the battery get too low or die anymore when I use it. Sometimes I forget of course. However you can also set it in the power options when you would like warnings and low battery signals. That will help to hopefully minimise the wear %.

    Cheers. :)

Mine is 3 months old. HWInfo says it has a wear level of 6.5%. I currently get slightly over 2 hours in power saving mode (low brightness, Video cards set to maximize battery life, Processor under %50 of full speed).

I leave it in all the time except when I take the laptop apart. Only fully discharged 3 times.

I dont know what it means, but that is the way I roll :)

I wouldn't consider wear indicators to be accurate at all. I get ~ 1.5-1.75hours, and as previously suggested, you can turn off the LED backlamps (by making them black) to increase battery life by a substantial amount. I also wouldn't use TS, Intel's own stepping system is pretty good already.

    Excellent advice Lozz...

also, leave the battery in, even when plugged in to AC power. These are much different than the batteries from the early to mid 90's that most of the internet battery articles talk about (most of them are dated). I have never removed my battery to prevent charging and have no issues. Also, draining that battery down for no reason is a bad thing - these are 'total' charge batteries - you are going to get a set # of charge cycles and then its toast. Just my opinion of course.

Will the battery eventually fail? Absolutely. No reason to speed it up though...

Whatever you decide to go with, remember this:

That battery has a warranty of 1 year. If it fails in that time or loses its charge capacity, call AW support and have it replaced.

My M17x is about 6 months old, and when in a class without a plug to suck power from, I can get about 2.5 hours. That is not idle! Not that writing programs use a lot of power... :p

Batt- power options - onboard video, screen 50%, all other settings the same as when it is plugged in.

2.5 hours? Hmm... I've tried many settings on mine and can't manage more than 1.5 hours from full charge. I have all lights off, stealth mode off (this feature really is useless btw), settings to battery saving mode, brightness to about 40% (it's very bright for my eye ahaha), etc. My average is a tad over an hour which means I don't go anywhere that doesn't have an outlet :D

well first Red has the R1 that has the integrated option, runs far less juice than the 4870CF :)

Make sure in your Power Save profile that the ATI Adapter is also set to Maximize battery life. Sometimes the Power Save mode forgets to set that.

And for the hard core, you can try to use something like RAEDON tools to down clock the cards, but I dont have first hand experience on this to help more than that.

The only thing left to do is turn down the clock on those video cards seeing as I don't use them anyhow :D But I'm always by an outlet so it's alright.

between the new 92W/h battery, the IGP on sandybridge and Intel's great power management, I would expect that most could see 2hours easy, and maybe even break the 3hour mark without much effort.

With usage as casual web browsing/video viewing and documents editing, I can normally get a little over 2 hours.
System specs: 940 XM CPU, 5870 crossfire, 1920X1200 screen, 4 Gig. RAM, 2X7200 RPM hard drives, Blueray burner, Intel Wifi, Bluetooth, and other standard stuff on.
Power setting (on battery): CPU: 25%, screen brightness: 15%, wireless: medium power saving, cooling policy: passive, ATI power setting: maximum battery life, and keyboad/speakers lights are off.

My batt is at 15% wear. I get around 1 hr 15 min with normal web browsing.

One issue that I've noticed is, infrequently after having my m17x on battery then replacing the cord, the battery no longer charges (but holds at 5, 10, 30%). To kick off the charge process, I need to shut down, remove the battery and cord, then hold down the power button for 10 secs.
