I went to the AW website (US) and saw the M17x classic was $1599. A coworker was interested in getting one so I was going to check for him.

But as soon as you click the link it says it starts at $1799.

I called and the sales person states it is $1799 not $1599 and they would not honor the $1599. I offered to send him a screen shot to prove it and they didnt care and didnt want to deal that much. Left a bad first impression on my coworker so he said forget it.
Anyone else had issue like this?

The $1,599 is the "wrong" one. It's not the first time Dellienware made that kinda "typo" if you are lurking here long enough.

IMO, the sales reps work on commission and they can give you a discount based on the market value of the laptop. Previously it was $1,599 starting but that already included $200 discount from the website, so the market value is still the same.
I think it works this way (im assuming you the sales rep does the best he can in both cases): lets say you have $200 discount with the $1599 deal, that means total you pay is $1399, and total discount is $400.
But, when the starting price is $1799, you can get $400 discount instead of just $200.

I am not sure though :)

lemme tell you my story here, bud. So 2 days ago I contacted dell sales asking for the phone number for the dell outlet. then she (the rep.) took a lurk in it, asked why i need outlet number for, i said im looking into ordering a refurbd one. her response was "well, do you want to see if you can build a brand new one and perhaps we can match price to a refurbd one?"
so yea, take your chances :D if it wasnt for me needing laptop the next day, i'd go for it :p

I just called again thinking maybe it was a lzy sales rep the first time. This new person told me they are not giving discounts on the new system. I stated this is an r2 not an r3, which she argued is the brand new model, lol. I know from this forum that even if it was an r3 they got pretty good deals.
I had to say no thanks and hang up. My credibility for AW not being so bad just got beat up on for idot sales reps.

I tried buying from the US because they are so much more expensive in Europe. And then there's the screen issue (only Americans are permitted to have the beautiful 1900 x 1200P version). Of course, Dell US may not sell outside the good 'ol USofA unless you are in the armed forces living abroad.

Just look at the difference in cost for identical specs at only half way through the configuration... €3804 is roughly $5200!!!

The website now shows a $1799 r2 and a $1999 r2, in which the only difference is a 320 gb hdd vs a 640 gb hdd. Price difference to upgrade is only $100. Whats going on with these guys? jeez.
Also they advertise the GTX285 being available, but you cant select it. Screwy.

Over the space of 6 days, on the French site, I configured the exact same spec as I have at the moment less the WUXGA screen as they don't have any. The final price was never the same. More fascinating still, at one time there was a difference of 900 euros. That's approximately $1240!!
