There isn't a thread on here that shows how much we are paying for the M17x.

Please post your configuration and the subtotal and why you chose your configuration. I think this will helpful to everyone and I will post mine as soon as I put my order in!

That thread is cool but is more for price comparison US vs UK. I wanted to see different prices on configurations and why do they pick the config. For example why did someone go with one video card vs the other...

I am torn between two systems at this moment. This is what i have configured:

    m17x+2630q+4gb1333ram+1.5gb gx460m+1080pFHD 120HZ 3D vision+320GB HD for $1730+tax

    or

    m17z+2630q+4GB1333ram+2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6970M+ 1080P 60HZ+320GB HD for $1670+tax

    Which one and why?

sorry forgot to include why i chose the configuration. I chose the i7 2820 processor, and 8Gb of ram because that was the best option for me. In an ideal world 16gb would have been perfect but thats an extra 240 i dont have. Also a 320gb hard drive is sufficient, i will put a 128gb ssd in the second bay. I chose the nvidia over the AMD because of the 3D, i am not a hardcore gamer, and i know if i wasnt i should have purchased the envy 17 3d. however HP has designed their own 3d instead of using Nvidia's technology, and in the past when a company decides to do something different then the rest it either blows up in their face or it just gets along so to avoid that i went with this laptop since nvidia's 3d technology is more universal. What really attracted me was the HDMI IN and the ability to stream wireless HD through the new technology they have implemented Sibeam. Also do you guys think i could have gotten a better price?

well i just ordered it today, sorry for not including that part. However if your a hardcore gamer there is no doubt that you should take the AMD option its a no brainer. On youtube someone was recording 100fps with that GPU. however I am not that much of a gamer and the GTX 460 is a very good card in itself and the 3D is a great extra.

Because everything on the computer feels like it is supercharged/turbo/crackhead all at the same time and everything is instant and snappy. No waiting for programs to open or for hard drive to spin up. INSTANT INSTANT INSTANT :p

I chose the 2720QM because It was as tep up that I could afford, the 1080p for HD gaming and the 6970 Radeon to hopefully give me at least a couple of years of good gaming before needing an upgrade.

I was originally planning on purchasing a Clevo based Sager 15 or 17 inch with the 485M but was really happy to see the ATI 6900 series card become available for the R3. I would much rather go with AW as I have bought and loved six unique Dell systems from since 1997!

The 460M and the 3D are not something I really have a need for, the technology is cool but I do not think I would use it, who knows.

I got the BD player because it just makes sense to do that with the 1080p screen and I own quite a few BluRay movies.

I went with the 320GB drive mainly to save money, I have a few spare drives around and I'll likely use one as an add-on in the second drive bay.

Gave me 150.00 off ... I miss the old days when AW didnt charge taxes unless ya lived in florida. Otherwise it was 2660.00 Which isn't that bad since I was planning on buy a clevo x7200 about the same spec just with a i7-960 for 3300.00

I would personally go with the second one because gaming performance to me is more important than 3D as I generally see 3D as a gimmick to be honest. How did you get the second configuration so cheap btw?

    Total was : $2805.61

I only went with the base CPU because, in general, I've never really experienced enough of a difference CPU wise to warrant the extra cost and this was an area that I used to trim price. I do most of my gaming on my desktop anyways and this is not meant to replace it.

I went with the 6970 because I wanted as high end GPU as I could get in the build and 3D does nothing for me. It's neat but I know I'd not use it often or even at all.

8 GB RAM because, well, it's 8 GB RAM. I might up that eventually after market when I can put a full 32 GB in it. We shall see.

I wanted the Blu-Ray since all I own are Blu-Ray players at home.

For the most part I wanted a laptop that would play my games well enough to make me happy yet also would serve as an entertainment and work platform.

In retro I would have gone for the 2.3 Ghz CPU instead but I do not want it badly enough to cancel my order and then re-sub the order and wait even longer.

I got mine for 2029.88 with 2720qm, 6300 wireless, 4gb ram, 3d bundle, 1 year advanced. Haggled quite a bit, but eventually met a point where they just wouldnt drop.

My advice, use someone who got a deal and show it to them. They will try and match it or very close, and if they dont, just thank them and move on.

    Goodness! That's SOOO expensive lolz!

Has your wait been that long as well? LOLZ. Ordered 1/27, waited till 3/3. Called Dell and aafes to cancel and reorder. Aafes entered the reorder, with reorder date 3/7. EDD will be 3/30, here. Aafes's price rules!

What was your discount? Was this purchased through aafes?

I setup the base price on AAFES then called into Dell and got a few fail sales folks before I got the one who I talked to for like 4 hours on the phone at first I had lots of ram and 1.5TB HDD space but when my wife said she got the ram for me all ready I told him and we did bare-bones I could of got a better CPU but when he said this price for this setup I well jumped on it.

Going to get SSD Drives next month when I have the Laptop. Told my wife it saves battery life alot and bla bla needless to say I got lucky and she said I could so I can have fun for the year I'm gone. But I had to give her my desktop and screen for this laptop I could of cried ha

Ah. That's a nice wife :) Aafes is the best though, in terms of price. The thing that helps most, IMO is the lack of sales tax. Tax wouldve killed my purchase, since I live in Cali.

I tried haggling but they said they said I already had the best price. As for EPP mine is an international order, so they wouldnt give me the EPP code for the US branch. :/

What concerns me is that the price far exceeds that of the g73sw by quite a lot. I think the R3 is very overpriced in that regard unless you are getting the big discounts. If you can't get the big discounts it might be better to get the g73sw or wait for the g74. The g73sw and the g53sw both have the updated SB processors.

I tryed it all, but the real issue is the price dell are trying to make those in Ireland pay. The best i could get them too on a base m17xr3 with 1080p and 6970 was over $3500.

seems like prices are all over the spectrum, wouldn't it make better business sense for Dell to just price the systems a little less no haggling required, so everyone gets the same price, instead of some paying list and others getting up to $300+ off? Example, if 10 pay $1700 and 5 pay list at $2000 = $27000 divide by 15 = $1800 for everyone and Dell would sell more units.

Heh, this wouldn't work because the folks who pay the $1800 would still try to haggle and get it for even less! The thing with buying things for less is that for a lot of folks, it's built into you mind to haggle/save money all the time usually. On the other spectrum, for a lot of folks, they hate to haggle and simply don't want to bother so this maximizes Dell's revenue.

The best are programs like AAFES and EPP where you can get a decent/great price and not do much haggling work. Sorta like those new car buying programs from Costco which are pretty competitive with what you get haggling.

After so many pages of this, does anyone have a summary of the discount percentage for USA buyers? Pricing doesn't help much since we will probably all configure different specced machines.

That would at least help others with what to aim for like when car shopping, you know so and so got it for 1k under invoice, etc...

The most I've seen so far is 30% for AAFES.

I think I've seen about 10% for haggling/EPP, but didn't really calculate any since it's still early I think for larger discounts.

    All,

I've seen the thread go a little off topic in price to state why specific configuration were chosen. Below below are the specifics I'm looking at:

    2720QM 2.2GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (2DIMMS)
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M
    320GB 7,200RPM HDD
    17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
    Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO Technology
    Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Alienware M17x, Soft Touch Stealth Black

    Total w/tax is 2094.00

The one area I'm struggling with is the video card. I've selected the GTX 460M just because it is in the middle option. I'm not a hard core gamer and the games I play are TW Golf, Call of Duty Series, and I'm getting into Civilization V. Is the card I selected over kill for what I'm doing or not enough.

    Thanks,
