So I bought an M17x R3 earlier this month and received it 1 week and 1 day after my order date. I think I was one of the last ones to get an R3. I feel that I got it for a really good price (specs below in my signature). If I were to build a comparable system now with the 7970m it would cost around $700more than what I paid ($550 or so if I add the RAM myself). Is it worth looking at sending mine back? (I am not sure of the return policy) or would it better to upgrade the video card after? or will the 6990m get me by for 2-3 years then I would just buy a new one. I will mostly be playing Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft which should not be an issue at all. I do dabble in some other games like MW3 and BF3, but I am currently playing BF3 on high and really do not see a difference between high and ultra.

Sorry for the long post, but it is a big decision. I recently bought and then sold an XPS 15 L502x within 3 months to move up to the M17x, so my wife may try to hurt me.

    Thanks

well...the 6990m is fine for everything now. It will rock D3 when it comes out. you'll see 50+ fps in BF3 ultra which you can't do now but that's not the end of the world.

it may be the end of the world if the wife gets pissed though lol

The 7970m is going for $450-500. you may be able to get $350 for your 6990m to help with the cost

^^^ $450-500 is clevo pricing. Its an oem card so no worries there, but with clevo vbios.

I don't even want to guess at what dell will charge. I think minimum $600-700

This is my first gaming laptop how often do they change the slot technology for the video cards? Do you think the next series of cards will be compatible with the R3?

That is true...I was just thinking if I live with my card for a year and see what comes out next year. I am thinking Diablo 3 will easily consume a year of gaming haha and I was runing the beta at 70-100fps on ultra.

We are on the same boat OP. I just got my R3 in middle of April and I was really thinking twice about keeping it or getting an R4. But since I really dont have a problem with my GPU, I am more inclined to keep it. I am still within my return period though.

I figured I will just give this to my son when he gets here next March and get myself a new one :D

Does Dell charge a restocking fee to send stuff back? I have read 15%, but I have also read that they do not charge anything within the first 30 days. I got mine on the 10th, so I will have to decide. If they do charge a restocking charge than I will not be sending it back for sure.

You have 21 days (most country's) so better contact Dell today or else you have to pay the 15% restocking fee.
