    Hi there,
I'm looking for a gaming laptop, but also something that can stay cool and quiet during windows applications.
G73 is reported to be quite silent, how is it compared to the m17x r2 ? aren't the fans too loud?
Also, for those who had the chance to test them both, wich one is having the best sound/peakers and hd screen (1080p)??
    Thanks

I cannot give any comparisons, but the m17x is very quiet when doing trivial things such as browsing the web and whatnot. As to the screen, if the asus is 1080p, the m17x is better. (It is 1200p)

For gaming on ultra high settings they can get pretty loud, but nothing a pair of headphones and a cooler can't fix :D

Is the touchpad responsive? I had some bad experience with EEPC touchpad (yes i know you can't compare) you have to press very hard to get a response...
Also can you scroll with it on the right and bottom?

    Yeah the touchpad is...like a 3fps video.

If the touchpad is very important to you, the M17x isn't for you :(

    I had them both....

The G73 screen is very nice but the RGB LED of the M17x is nicer. Better colors. The speakers I think they are equal but the fans in the M17x can drown them out a bit. The M17x is MUCH louder...not even close when gaming.

    I had them both also..

There is NO comparison the Asus g73jh is MUCH QUIETER... like night and day. The m17x-r2 pales in comparison when it comes to quietness of the fans under heavy gaming.

If you want quiet, Asus g73jh all the way. IF you want ultimate gpu power, dual gpu m17x-r2

I tried the g73jh took back, not even close 1 GPU instead of 2 and plastic and screen not as nice and no glass love the glass cover. Don't even hear the fans after awhile. :D

As far as sound goes, the easiest way I can compare it when running intensive games/apps that heat them up is the G73 is the equivelant of an idleing Honda Civic while the m17x is the equivelant of the afterburner on an F22 Raptor. Maybe not quite that bad literally but I can tell you my G73 I had was silent even when running intensive apps, while my m17x is pretty loud.

And I can tell you if you had chosen you keep your G73, it would not last nearly as long as the m17x.

The m17x is loud because it has a superior cooling design.

if the cooling design is good, it shouldnt be that loud in the first place, isnt it? the main reason M17x is loud is because the fan revs up to a higher than normal RPM and fan blade design can contribute to the acoustic performance of the fan too. not to mention the heatsink of M17x is not entirely made of copper. either way, i do feel that the heatsink and cooling fan of M17x are kind of outdated and wasnt really designed to be used with MR5870 or newer generation top of the line gpus. that's why they have to compensate by running the fan high to keep the system cool. it does the job and M17x still packs a lot of muscle, that i truly agree.

The fact that it's loud is because the fan is spinning up to high RPMs, yes, but I wouldn't call it 'higher than normal' RPM. What it means is more air being pushed through the cooling system, so better cooling.

The Asus might be quiet, but that also would indicate it lacking in cooling. If the fans aren't spinning up fast, you have much less air being pushed through. I have heard plenty of stories of them overheating; very rarely have I heard of an overheating M17x.

I've heard my cousin's M17x while it's idle, and it is almost silent. The fans will only rev up when the components are being placed under load and warming up.

Get a nice pair of gaming headphones, and you won't be able to hear it, even when it's going full blast.

i agree, the more air pushed out, the better the cooling effect. however, if the heatsink can cope with the added amount of heat, the fan would not have to work so hard to push that much of air over the sink to cool it down. im not sure how effective asus g73jh cooling system is, but clevo's machines with massive and all copper sink help to reduce the fan RPM which translate to lower noise emission. M17x cooling system is indeed effective and has proven itself. what i meant was, in order to cope with the added heat and demand from newer gpu without changing the heatsink/overall case design, the only option they had is to rev up the fan RPM which corresponds to louder noise. gpus remain acceptably cool, but at the expense of louder noise during load.

The reason I got rid of the G73 is because it was the second one I had in two weeks due to problems, it was the 5th asus in about a 1 1/2 months I can tell you honestly that I think the G51jx is the most problematic design I've ever seen. I understand it's a superior execution of the cooling system, and on the note of the touchpad just as the guys above have said the touchpad for the m17x is usable for web surfing, word processing and simple tasks but not for gaming. The touchpad on the g73 isn't bad not the best I've used but definitely better, but I think once the driver fix for the polling rate is released that may change.

Just confirming what others have said. Under load the M17x is definitely much louder than the G73. It's still not even close to what I would call noisy though. Both are great systems. The M17x just has better build quality by far and a better screen.

I also guess that, using the integrated graphic card helps to reduce the heat and fan noise while using windows applications?

Dane, did you get the HD version of the screen on the G73? Is it that way better on the m17x r2 ? I heard that it was an IPS on the dell, is that true?
