How to OC the M17x-R2 using SetFSB:

Also available for download in txt file.
View attachment SetFSB Overclock M17x R2.txt

    Requirements:
    Freeware SetFSB
(Optional: Unlocked A10 BIOS) Link to unlocked BIOS

EDIT: I dont recommend boosting up the voltage on CPU, it only lowered my performance for some reason.

I have done this before on my G73JH that had the Twin Turbo button. I watched the Offset changes, before using Twin turbo, and after.
I've come to the conclusion that i can OC my CPU just using PLL Diagnosis. Then i've decided to give this method a shot on M17x R2, and i figured it works just the same.

So in this guide you will learn how to overclock any CPU in a M17x R2.

    1. The first step is to download "SetFSB" and run it.
Download SetFSB 2.2.134.98 from author's site
    2. Then switch to the "Diagnosis" tab, and set clock generator to "PLL diagnosis".
    3. Click "Get FSB" and let it populate the addresses, should look something like this.

    4. Once you have done that, you will have to update offsets to do actuall overclocking. This is done is done in four steps:
    - Select the offset you want to modify
    - Enter a different value in the "Hex" field
    - Press "Update"
    - Press "Apply"
    5. Those that went ahead and flash your laptop to unlocked BIOS, can skip to step 9.
    6. Change the offset 00h from 21 to 29.
    7. Change the offset 0Ch from 0D to 20.
    8. Now you have unlocked the FSB overclocking, and you have more offests available for modification, should look something like this.

    9. The 2 offsets that control FSB are 0Fh and 10h, in the attachment there is a little table of FSB speeds,
and what combination of 0Fh and 10h offsets you should use to reach it.

    View attachment The FSB Table.doc

    Eligible values for 0Fh offset:
    15-18 (Lower is better)
    55-58 (Lower is better)
    95-98 (Lower is better)
    D5-D8 (Lower is better)

    Eligible values for 10h offset:
    31-39 (Higher is better)

I've found that 149 FSB is the sweet spot for me, but i don't recommend jumping right to it.
Increase the FSB by small amounts, test it with Prime95, and when it fails, just back a couple MHz back.

I will look into the font problem when i have more time.

UPDATE: Benchmark results are on post #7

I wish you had a 920/940xm cpu with a couple of crossfired 7970m's to tell me if it bottlenecks them :D

Being total noob in OC field - is that method preferable than Throttle Stop?

    @sangemaru:
i'm already looking for a XM cpu :D

    @McEwan:
This method overclocks everything from CPU to RAM speeds. It can be used in combination with Throttle Stop to ensure maximum OC potential :D
But using this method you can OC Non-Extreme CPUs, that's why i like it.

    Throttle Stop (Increasing Multipliers)
    SetFSB (Increasing FSB)

CPU core clock = FSB x Multiplier

Hope that clears this question :D

Oh, i had to remove 1 5870 because it wont work properly :S
I can only run with it in primary slot, but it glitches when it's in primary slot :S

What are you using to overclock your 5870, I'm trying to find something reliable to overclock my xfire 5870s in my r2. Amd gpu clock tool and sapphire trixx will only clock one card. Just figured I'd ask because I'd love to get those clock speeds :)

I was using MSI afterburner, but i flashed the cards with unlocked overdrive VBIOS :) otherwise it would crash.

Thanks for the response, I flashed both my cards with ati winflash, using radeon bios editor to mod the clocks. Right now I'm at 775/ 1075 but still at 1.05v. What voltage did you use to get those clocks if I may ask?

1.05v same as you. usually you can bump to 800/1075 i haven't found a GPU that couldn't run at these clocks yet. So i consider it as a safe overclock.

    hello there,

i know it's an old thread, but i was wondering how did you get your multiplier to 22? I tried Throttle stop no luck, i am stuck at x13.

It will go up to the 22X multiplier when it has to on load.

    I'm guessing you have 720QM.

It's due to turbo-boost and only 1 core being active...

Default Turbo ratio limits on core i7 cpu-s are (4cores/3cores/2cores/1core):
    720QM 13/13/20/21
    740QM 14/14/21/22
    820QM 14/14/22/23
    840QM 15/15/23/24
    920XM 17/17/23/24
    940XM 18/18/24/25

Well in extreme edition cpu's (920XM and 940XM), the multipliers are unlocked and you can run them 30/30/30/30 if the CPU is capable and the temperatures arent too high.
(I've seen max 26 multi on all 4 cores)
