I call this the THIEF method because basically we are going to steal the compatible adapter's I.D so the 330 can work just as good but have more room for power...

    1. BOTH ADAPTERS HAVE TO BE PLUGGED IN SAME SPLITTERT/OUTLET for this to work (speaking for myself...)......... this is only way works for me i haven't tried same outlet....

    2. if you try to use 330 with just a cut i.D cable your gpu's will be nerfd n bat wont charge nor be able to change brightness but laptop will boot without batt. but after you have rubd the 2 I.D cables together and see the cable icon on laptop you wont need the other adapter... the 330 will function fine on its own as-long as its on power and plugd to laptop..you can shut laptop off or restart etc... the 330 adapter just need to be plugged in

    3. i used I.D cable from all way up front of adapter cable.. don't know about other areas

    4. enjoy ^.^ till new bios mod is out

    5. this picture explains everything

im guessing this can work with any other adapter/laptop as-long as they can plug into laptop and 1 of them is capable with it.

basically like hot wiring a car cough* cough* idk any of that car stuff >.>

Ok That makes A Lot more sense.

EDIT: I can also confirm that the "Hotwire" method works with the 240 watt PSU. Touch the Data cable, and it will register with the computer regardless of if the data cable is connected or not . . . . that is until you unplug and replug the PSU from the computer again.

Yep I saw the edits. I found the same things with the same method on the 240 watt PSU.

so when you guys say "hot wire" could you also leave the id cable connected without using the hot wire methoud and touching them together? I'm assuming so, so the next question, is there a reason to not just keep them connected (taped or what have you) or is it simply a matter of preference?

It's a matter of preference, so that way you don't have to have 2 PSU's connected all the time . . . that is until you unplug the 330 watt PSU and you have to Hotwire it again.

With a killawatt meter - or if you had a beefy Multimeter capable of measuring ~ 20amps you could do than and just multiply by the voltage to get your watts.

We don't need this for the R3 right? I don't think the R3 checks ID's?

R3 doesn't need it because it doesn't support two gpu's so your not going to need the extra wattage.

Not so much that you would need anywhere near 330 watts though.

Where is the eeprom stored? I might offer a service to just swap the ROM from one PSU to another for people for a nominal fee :)

Most Dell laptops do. When I'll get another PSU I'll open it and finally see if it's possible to swap the chips.

Nice work Stealth! Couldn't you just have both PSU's connected to the wall with the ID cable crossed over. Turn them both on and then turn the 240watt off? Save you having to 'hotwire' it every time....

EDIT: or just leave them both on, the 240watt will be taking up practically no power as it isn't connect to anything...

Ok, so I have been hunting around for a 330 watt psu.

On eBay it is £130 (200 USD) plus postage (£30 for me)

I contacted Dell and they are going for £156 plus postage (£10), however there is a 4 - 5 week lead time on the product....

Does anyone have any Dell contacts were we can get it cheaper and sooner?

EDIT: Sorry, eBay equates to roughly £121 plus postage, so it is cheaper and can potentially be purchased now..but how do we know it is legit..

    So the plot thickens...

The Dell guy called me back and said they only sell the 330 watt psu's in America. Which is strange because I am sure they sell the m18x here in the UK. He spoke to someone in Alienware, and he was informed that they ship the 240 watt psu's with the m18x and no longer sell the 330 watt ones as they caused issues.

I don't know how correct this is, because I am fairly certain that any m18x with x-fire 6990s will need more than a 240 watt psu..

Anyone have the inside scoop on this story?

Go to m18x add SLI 580M's to your cart and go to the last page, it should show your PSU wattage.

i spoke in a online chat with dell parts told em i spilled coffee on friends adapter and needed a m18x 330 watt adapter asap and that ive been searching on web a long time... she said at first they only had 240's but i told em thats only if you have a single GPU so she dug around more and found 1.. they only have refurbished but they work...my 6990's might arrive today if not definitely by Monday :DD .

I just don't understand how the Dell reps can be so clueless on some of these items...it really isn't that hard.

Can you explain Stealth55 how it's work ? Just touch the two ID cables when you start the M17x ?
