How to get WMP, Quicktime/iTunes, etc. to use nVidia card on M17x?

I had a coupon and got a few movies from iTunes for free. Got them in 1080p resolution. But when I try to play them from iTunes, I noted that they ran extremely slow/choppy - unwatchable, actually. When i watch them using an alternate player (Zoom player) they run very well.

So just investigating and I notice that the NVIDIA card is not being used when I try to run these in iTunes (which I assume is using Quicktime to play them.) OK - figure I'll set iTunes to use the NVIDIA card in the NVIDIA control panel, but it will not allow me to switch from integrated graphics to NVIDIA. While poking around, I noticed it will also not allow me to switch Quicktime nor Windows Media Play from Integrated to NVIDIA.

No idea why the restrictions - any ideas/tips on how to make these utilize the card I want on my M17x?

    Thanks

You can use Nvidia Inspector to force any application to use the Nvidia adapter.

The intel should be capable of playing 1080P just fine, have you checked your acceleration settings?
