Hi, i have an Alienware M17x r3
intel i7 2720QM
6gb ddr3 ram
gtx 460m
I heard that people could change the inf. file in the latest drivers in order to install it on their system. I have 2 questions:
1) how do i do this
2) Are there any drawbacks or possible damage to my hardware.
-
Anyone? would greaty appreciate an answer.
-
I am looking for the same info, I found an .inf file online for the 267.76 drivers, (yes it worked. great drivers), but I am now looking for a .inf (or for someone to tell me how to edit one) for the 270.+ drivers that are out. I'll keep my eye on this page for updates.
Edit:
I am downloading the official 267.76 driver, and in notepad I am going to find the lines that were edited in the .inf file I found for the R3 install. If I am correct, editing the same lines in the 270.+ drivers .inf file will allow it to install on the R3. I'll let you know how it goes. "why didn't I do this earlier?" -
-
do you want the 270.+ inf file, or the 267.76 inf file (the one I used already)?
-
Just saw your edit would love that update as soon as you can
-
can i have the 267 for now and tell me how the 270 goes
-
here is the link to the working inf file for 267.76 " removed"
Just download the official 267.76 driver, attempt to run it. when it fails, (and it will) put this inf file in the Display.Driver folder in the Nvidia folder that was extracted (C:Nvidia\Nvidia_graphics_Driver_v267.76\Display.Driver). then run the installer from the extracted folder (not the installer you downloaded, the one that was extracted from the download "C:Nvidia\Nvidia_graphics_Driver_v267.76\setup.exe")
P.S. tell me how the install went bud, I love to hear good news =^_^=
Edit: posted the link to the original inf file, see page two for the edited inf file -
do i uninstall the drivers im using now?
-
Is this only for the 460m card?

Hmm... I had the vistax64 too, but worked fine, I'll re-test one sec-
Edit:
lol sry uploaded the original inf fileone sec to upload the edited one-
http://www.4shared.com/file/zd6g6rsw/nvdm.html there ya' go -
Install worked perfectly. UNFOURTUNALY i gta4 STILL doesnt detect my video card what are the major improvments of these drivers?
-
some game improvements, temps down, ext... the 270.+ drivers are the real update, I am starting the compare between the two inf files, I found one line already that was added. when I have finished the comparison I'll make the edits to the 270.+ driver, and test it.
the 270.+ is the next family of driver. major improvements, and update for 3D in windowed gaming, ext, ext... -
drivers work really well. Thanks ALOT man your a life saver. I dont have a 3d screen but the if u get those working let me know.
-
Ha! Found the magic line that needed to be added!
%NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.01% = Section038, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DD1
tested, and that makes the 267.76 driver install on the R3, I am going to download the 270.51 driver, and add that line to the inf file in the proper place, and see if that gets it (the 270.51 driver) to install. If it works, I'll post the inf file for ya' I'll be back in an hour or so, got to download the 270.51 driver, edit the inf file, and test. Wish me luck =^_^= "I feel smart" -
for some reason WoW is crashing now
-
Hmm..? odd. I dont play WoW, did you go to Nvidia Control Panel and set up the device yet? your current WoW settings may be conflicting with the Nvidia CP settings, nvidia may be trying to render it's way, and WoW may be trying to render it it's own way. Just a thought. Really odd... I have not had one problem with that driver. I have tested FFXIV, left 4 dead, left 4 dead 2, bioshock, AVP 2010, and more... no problems.
I did get create a .inf file for the 270.51 driver, nvdm_2.inf - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download and yes it is working =^_^=
rename it to nvdm.inf (not nvdm_2.inf) and place that in the display.driver folder in the 270.51 directory, then run the setup.exe to install. -
tell if u encounter any issues
-
will do- I'll be posting in 24 hours to let ya' all know if there are any problems. so far so good.
Edit:
I must say, I was scared to install a beta driver on my R3 using a "fix" I created, but after testing 4 games, and running a few tests, everything seams great! no problems =^_^= -
seems that WoW is the only one crashing. I guess ill try a reinstall tommrow. Thx for all your help.
-
I have tested L4D 1, and 2, bioshock, and final fantasy XIV, (all are running 3D better, and at lower temps)
-
Got WoW working again after searching for a fix
.
Edit:
I also got a really good preformance boost on it -
-
no idea what caused the crashing just had to delete my interface folder/the contents of the W/T/F folder and the WNB folder. I noticed this caused the game to remake these folders causing the games settings to go back to all low.
-
I have been using the 270.51 drivers for a few days now. Nothing wrong with them. they run most of my games better, and the other/s the same as the 267.76 drivers. nothing wrong with these drivers I have come across yet. great for 3D (I love that now you can play 3D in windowed mode, I alt+tab quite a bit). anyone with a 260M should feel safe with these.

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Will this work for the optimus version of the R3 as well or just the 3D?

This driver (270.51) with the modded inf file will work with the 460M regardless of the screen model (60 or 120). Bottom line, if you have an R3 with a 460M this will work.
glad I could be of help to the people with the R3 =^_^= feels cool to contribute to the alienware community -

Does anybody know if the new offical 270.61 driver has any difference with the 270.51 beta drivers?
I kinda wanna stick with the 270.51 beta because I already have the modded INF, and I don't really know if anyone has the modded INF for the 270.61 (M17x r3) God, I wish the R3 was compatible with the normal driver. -
I'll mod the inf for the 270.61 tonight, and test them. once I have them running I'll post the inf for all to use =^_^=
-
well, did it again. got a working inf file for the 270.61 driver, as with the other/s rename it to nvdm.inf (not nvdm_270.61). put that in the display.driver folder in the unzipped folder the official nvidia driver unpacked, and run the setup.exe
nvdm_267.61.inf - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download
I just installed it, ran a few tests, and seems to work just as well as the 270.51 drivers. but as usual I will post in 24, and 48 hours to tell you if there is anything you should take note of with this version. by the way, its been a few days since I first installed the 270.51 drivers, and they worked fine. no problems I have seen, but now I am on the 270.61 so that is as far as I get with the old one. -

BTW: As you know I was having FPS issues (probably the Nvidia Control Panel wanting to run the games with the IGP even though it was set to the High Performance GPU [I have Optimus]) with 270.51 drivers and you said to delete any existing profiles and make new ones. Is this something done inside the Nvidia Control Panel? Do I have to do something through Windows Explorer?
Sorry for being such a noob, but how do we resolve the FPS issue/ remove profiles?
+1 rep btw -
the game profiles you are looking to delete are in the game folder. the "user settings" or something- different for most games. when upgrading to a new graphics driver that is usually the problem (Nvidia tries rendering the game its way, and the game's profile tries to render it its way conflicting with the graphics driver).
I am on day two, ran L4D 1, and 2, RE5, silent hill (all of them), ffxiv, and a few more- all are running great. ran ffxiv for 8 hours no problems =^_^= -
I just installed the nvidia 270.61 driver on my system and it works fine, to mod the inf (nvam) you just need two edited lines to the 460m entry that starts with %Nvidia, these entries are near the top of the file, theres a 6.0 and 6.1 section, just add the numbers i indicated below - overwrite whats there in both tables
add this to the end of the line indicated in red
%NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.04% = Section077, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DD1&SUBSYS_ 04901028
0DD1 is the 460m dev id -
