I am still learning / testing my system.
Very limited free time hence slow testing.

But Last night I couldn't make the 3D via HDMI output work on my M17xR3
    TV is a Sony 52HX903.

    First PowerDVD 9.6 wouldn't work.
Installed PowerDVD 11 and that worked but couldn't enable 3D.
On the 3D configurations it says need a HDMI 1.4 adapto?!!?
But the GTX 580M already has that.

Do I need to change a setting somewhere?

In order to do 3D output you need HDMI 1.4 output.

According to the tech specs of our machines:
Alienware M17x With Optional 3D Laptop Screen Details | Dell

We do have HDMI 1.4 out. You'll need Blu-ray software that supports it such as WinDVD or PowerDVD (usually the more expensive editions have 3D capabilities).

There is no such thing as an HDMI 1.4 adaptor, it either supports it or it doesnt.

You'll need 3D Blu-ray software, an HDMI 1.4 source (your laptop), a cable capable of supporting the throughput of HDMI 1.4 (most will if they arent made cheaply), and a TV capable of 3D with HDMI 1.4 inputs.

When you by the cable, make sure it includes 2160p or something. Cause if it just stops at 1080p it means your cable won't be able to do it

I actually have a mid-end home cinema with 3D TV and projector all set up with 1.4 3D High speed ethernet spec. HDMI cables.

I wonder if it is the unoffocial Nvidia 280.xx driver or some setting.

    ****RESOLVED****

I had to enable the Nvidia 3D vision and configure the settings from the start bar program list.
I had to set this up while connected to the 3D TV.

    All working fine now.
