This is a question for people that have recieved the new M17x and over clocked the processor. How did you over clock the processor?

Interesting. I experience a similar thing. You say there is a medical condition for it? I thought it was because of the way I learned how to speed-read.

the computer will shut down if you overclock it to high... there will not be enough voltage going to the CPU to harm it.... but if you overclock then block a vent it can over heat and die.

i have never heard of a laptop exploding in a laptop in desktop they explode them

in my experiance as long as there is nothing physically ary i havent burnt anything out the system has shut off before it got too hot

Ok to confirm, you can clock it higher than 3.20 in the bios, but I only looked at the speeds in the bios after I selected the multiplier, I still havent actually booted up with those speeds yet. I will though, but I will do it incrementally, I want to check the temperatures on each speed, 3.06 runs nice and cool :D!

a bit freaky that video...looks like u only have a few seconds from the initial white smoke stage to the first major puff/explosion...the one that put a hole in the palm rest and touchpad - exactly where your palms/fingers would be.

dunno how recoverable a laptop with an exploded (and subsequently stopped) battery is but i think i'd rather have the battery under the screen/keyboard area than under my palms - better to have the screen destroyed than my hands. agreed ur fingertips are still in danger but easier/faster to respond to that than something under ur palm.

and who keeps a class D chemical fire extinguisher at home? agreed some offices might have them but how many of us are taking our personal laptops to work? only practical home option is to dunk it in the bath tub/sink but then u have other logistical issues like 'filling it up' before it turns into a fire that water can't prevent or will make worse (the 1000+ deg metal fire). u can run out of your house but it's probably gonna burn down if it happens the way it did in the video.

With the class of fire, I doubt even water wouldn't aggrivate the fire...

remember, water is just a combination of hydrogen and oxygen... when mixed in any other situation, other than water, both chemicals are accellerants. with the chemical nature of the fire, there's no way to predict how the water will react with the fire.

smothering is a more likely option, but it doesn't solve the heat problem, which is what's causing the chain reaction.

I'm afraid a class D fire extinguisher is about the only way to go... if you're paranoid, take the battery out of your system when working on A/C power (when it's reading as charged), and keep a small class D fire extinguisher nearby... buy it yourself if needed, they can't cost too much... and what is the cost for your safety anyways?

Bottom line, water probably isn't the solution to the problem.

    but that's just my $.02
I'm no chemical engineer or anything.

I also meant to add to this thread that stable CPU speeds for the Extreme series CPUs that I've seen mentioned around the forums (no idea if it's for the right CPU/System), have been around 3.33Ghz, higher than that, I've seen complaints of BSODs.

no idea if it's relevant or not... but people are just starting to get their m17x units now, so we have to give them time to test it and play some games before we get everything we want on the forums.

    Nope need a PLL.

FSB and timings are open (can be unlinked) in bios but the multiplier and rest are locked out.

hey look on or around the big Nvidia GPU thats right beside the CPU

you have to remove the keyboard , then the palm rest and then the CPU heat sink. Then you need to pull up the black parts around the Nvidia chip because its under them some where

Did i miss something?, because if you have FSB settings in bios you can already do some overclock (not much since you don't have a way to change vcore lol).

    yea you missed every thing

you need the PLL to communicate with the CPU when you OC via Setfsb you overclock the FSB and the CPU in bios you only overclock the FSB aka how fast the ram communicates with the CPU. It will help some but not much

Yeah i know how overclock works lol. But as C2Q/C2D uses fsb it's fsb x mult = clock, so if you can increase the FSB you can overclock it (and the M17x bios have fsb settings right?)... Unless something in notebooks is different i still don't get it lol.

Just increasing your FSB in bios should overclock your process...

    Q9000 is 266 x 7.5 = 1995
    QX9300 is 266 x 9.5 = 2527

    (the math isn't exact)

So if you increase your FSB to 300 you got 2250 (300 x 7.5).

    :p

I went into set up and changed my multiplier from 9.5 to 11, which results in 2.93
If I try to higher to 12 (3.06) I get BSOD every time.

Am I doing something wrong? Missing something?
3.06 should be easily obtainable, no??

3.06 should be a no brainer for that chip but sadly i havent see what other settings there are in the bios ? others have mentioned the lack of voltage going to the CPU ? Can you run CPU-Z when its clcoked at 2.93 and see how much voltage its getting.

They r doing overclock in bios... Trying to increase vcore with cpugenie isn't an option because they r not going to be able to boot up with a higher overclock and default vcore lol.
