Title says it all. How can I undevolt the 6970m for cooler temps?

    What are your temps?
Have you tried repasting the card, if not i would do so before attempting something else.

From what i heard around, M17x R3 users claim that this laptop does a good job cooling that little beast.

Don't think it's possible. There were a lot of people on here, myself included, who tried to modify the VBios for an overvolt on benchmarking and anytime anything but the clocks changed the system wouldn't boot. I think what was determined was there is an actual chip that isn't there that is needed to modify the voltages of the card. You can try to modify the vbios/voltages using RBE but I doubt that even lowered voltages will work.

Undervolt works. You need to test it for stability though... I had my 3d voltage on 0.95V, but didn't test it for a long time... but it seemed to work fine during the short tests. 1.0V or 1.05V are probably more stable, like I said, you have to test it.

ATI Tray Tools lets you undervolt the card without flashing, that's good for testing imo. Then you can still decide whether it's a good idea or not.

Overvolting unfortunately doesn't seem to work, I tried everything I could think of, with different vbios. (The last test bricked my card, need to reprogram the eeprom :D)

how can i undervolt with ati tray tools?

    EDIT

I just installed ati tray tool and tryed to open it up, and it causes a BSOD right on opening up. Page fault error in non-paged area?

Make sure you have the latest version, try reinstalling it. If you start the program, it opens minimized in the system tray, just go to the tray, right click on the symbol and choose what you want to do, then a window opens.

You'll need to create the custom voltage values before you can change them.

I don't know of an other program that lets you change the voltage of the 6970m, but you can modify your vbios and flash it to your GPU. But only change the 3d voltage. Overvolt won't work. Undervolt should work, I tested 1.05V, 1.00V and even 0.95V. Don't know what or if it will run stable for you... I had my 3d voltage on 0.95V and it worked, though I didn't test it thoroughly.

I reduced the boot/3d voltage on my 6970M (in a M15x) using an R3 vbios to 1.0v using RBE. The flash took without incident and has been mostly stable. There was instability with the 11.6 drivers, but that appears to be driver, not voltage, related. With the 11.5b set installed, there have been no black screens or lockups. Idle temps are reduced, but not significantly (maybe 2-3C, no more).
