Also, i have looked, and searched but either i am stupid, or something, because i can not find a solution to this problem that is not 2-3 years old.
Again, thank you. -
What exactly is the problem with your machine?
-
ive tried to update my drivers in the past, and every time its been an extreme hassle and i forget how to do it each time.
This is a problem, since i cant afford new computers or parts, and my machine should be able to play WoW at least on minimal settings (i hope?).
But i installed it for the first time in 7 years, got all the patches, was about to buy the new expansion, and thought i should try running it first.
It says i need a new driver.
Dell is a company built specifically for aggravating its customers by making Nvidia 9400(m?)driver updates impossible to manage alone.
Im not even confident my x17 is an x17 or x17m because of the extremely poor attention to detail, or manipulative deceit in charging customers 120$ for an out-or-warranty driver update, and its just some registry edits and ini/cfg files that were intentionally hobbled to bilk customers of more money.
TLDR;
im frustrated, this is way harder than it should be, im eternally grateful for any help leading to or solving this issue. -
please forgive the hostility, i just spent a few solid days nearly breaking the only computer i have over this issue.
-
You should not be running the game with the on board video anyways. What is your dedicated card, example... GTX 260M, 280M, is it in SLi configuration or are you runnin AMD graphics?
-
It is a stock laptop.
Whatever my DxDiag says, is what it came with I think. (aside from what I think are the very latest drivers Dell eventually abandoned this model with, :cry
It might not be possible to run WoW on this thing anyways, and that's kinda suck, but not unexpected given it's age, and the upgrades WoW has had.
Just wanted to determine if it's worth trying to hack around dell's obstacle, if it meant losing all my wife's important stuff by accident, or if there's a significant risk doing so...
I don't have the means/ability to clone her drive in case I 'oops', and it's been decades since I've actually messed with the registry...
So if anyone can assist in that decision (ideally someone that plays WoW today, on an unmodified computer from olden times like mine, or reliable heresay even, as this forum is filled with people that would know these things I don't.)
That could solve this entire dilemma I'm having.
Thank you again -
Now that I read that back, I don't know if any if that answered any of the questions anyone asked of me, lol.
Sorry for the confusion. The last new video card I bough was in 2000.
That's also about the same time my computer knowledge runs out...
 -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I'm guessing this machine is an R1 version. This came with the 9600m as the on-board graphics (before intel dropped the die onto the CPU). This GPU is not really capable of gaming and is for running windows - and battery. The machine has two extra GPU slots and this is where your gaming GPU(s) resides. There can even be two connected together.
I have no idea how graphic switching works on that machine but you should go to Device Manager and see what video cards it sees?
Use the driver/inf combo from LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers (win 8 and win 7 are same), I'm afraid it's the only way to keep up to date on old hardware. Even with an old driver WoW should not be a problem IF your main GPU is operating though.

We are exploring low-cost modern alternatives.
I just learned I can buy an entry level modern desk system new, for @200$
Thank you everyone, the path of least resistance here might be in my price range compared to a monthly wow subscription.MickyD1234 likes this. -

I think you're working on the integrated graphics card (motherboard) only (nvidia 9400m). So first step should be to enable the 'real' graphics card(s). SInce we don't know your setup yet, try the following:
Make sure your M17x is plugged in and attached to power (otherwise it automatically disables the discrete graphic card(s)
At boot time, press F2 to enter setup.
In BIOS menu, go into advanced graphics settings (sorry don't know by heart as I'm typing here) and DISABLE both following settings (write down the current settings in case you want to return to what it was, I'm not sure the drivers for the discrete cards are installed correctly at this point in time).
- Integrated Graphics -> set to disabled
- Hybrid Graphics -> set to disabled
Save BIOS settings and exit (I think F10)
Your M17x should now start with the discrete graphics. If OK, check nvidia control panel for the setup or do the dxdiag again so we can find out if you have 1 or 2 260M or 280M video cards. Chances are if it runs, you can play right ahead
We 'll see from there.
Shame to throw this nice piece of equipment away. I know, they shouldn't have made it this complicated in setup, but... -
Thank you!
I didn't know that was a thing to do, or that I had more than one video card, lol!
When I can look at those settings I will let you know
I have an x17 w/Nvidia9400(m?) video card. I'm kinda stupid. Please help me update my video drivers. Thank you.
