So a while back i accidentally shorted my 6990m and only 8 pcie lanes work, Wich while angry is still fine, Eight PCIE 2.0 is enough hell 8 PCIE 1.0 is enough for the 6990m we aren't talking about Titan Z's here, Now the problem is.

It wont run with the 2630QM installed in the machine only an I5 dualcore 24xx model and i think i figured out why, The i5 only routes 8 pcie lanes to the gpu anyway and does not appear to have an IGP onboard so to fix it, I think a peice of tape over the damaged PCIE lanes on the 6990m pcb should fix it and allow me to use it, Problem is, I can't seem to find a pin out for it to know wich ones to block off.

I know that Eight lanes completely work perfectly fine because the system runs fine, But lets face it only having 2 cores isn't enough thesedays. So i really want and need to put my 2630Qm back in, That and the 24xx dualcore and the m17x R3 were never designed to be used together so the fan has to be manually controlled.

If i take the 6990m out and just run the 2630QM everything seems to work fine though the windows 8 HD 3000 driver does appear to artifact here and there only in windows, Outside of windows, Bios, Linux distros etc it seems to function fine.

Second question! If i can't find a pin out i am going to need a new card, I'll probably go for the 780M, Will the 780m Function fine on the 1600x900 display, I'm not going to have any issues am i? I can't afford a new setup i can only afford 1kish in new parts come tax return time (soon)

Hi there, well most of your post zipped right over me, so I can't confirm your logic :( But...

For the replacement there are quite a few threads on R3 to 680/780/even a couple of recent ones trying out the 880m :D

Basically you need an unlocked bios to be able to disable the iGPU - as the card was not one sold with the machine optimus gets all messed up and the card does not switch correctly. You may (but not always) need to use HWInfo to create your own fan table but that can wait until your first test and temps.

You will also need a modified .inf file that goes into the installer so that both machine and card are recognised as compatible hardware (LaptopVideo2Go)

    Good luck ;)

I just need to know if the 780m will be fine driving the 1600x900P display, I know LVDS can be very finicky with these sort of things and everyone here is using 1080p displays.

Thank you Mr porras, You have always been a big help on the forums, Since you work for alienware you wouldn't happen to know where i can get a pin out Diagram would you? for MXM 3.0B, I need to shut off 8 lanes in order to fix a problem
