My m17xr3 would BSOD everytime i install the nvidia drivers. I have a vertex 3 120gm btw...After days of trying to get it to work and countless re-installations of windows 7.... think i found a solution...well its been working for me for the past 10 hours hopefully i don't jinx myself. I left it in ACHI mode and never switched it to RAID..also, I think its in the order of which you install things that makes it BSOD sometimes... I was following the recommended installatiion order on another post and after hours of wasted time with a fresh install i attempted:
1. installing nvidia drivers first to see if it would fail....since I wasted so much time i wanted to see if this would BSOD immediately instead of downloading all my favorite things and be disappointed...miraculously it did not BSOD
2. installed everything else installed except 3d glasses drivers....nope still good!
3. installed 3d glasses drivers....and its still good....
4. Then i attempted to install windows updates and this is when problems started happening..first failure when attempting to install SP1...everytime it would start it would BSOD on me...
5. so I downloaded it directly off the site and installed it without windows update and restarted...and its still good...
5. Changed the filestep off C:...restarted and its still good
6. installed Heroes of Newerth...
7. installed starcraft 2 just finished right now at 5:18AM...still good,...
8. installed AIM and random updates and restarted...and my computer is still alive...
As you can tell im no computer genius or good at grammar or spelling..but this worked for me...

YAY. Hopefully it holds up, keep us posted! Now i have to decide which drive to buy!

Usually we run benchmarks at stock settings to compare.
Use Crystal Disk Mark for your SSD and post a screen shot.
Congrats -

sorry! -
Those speeds are lovely! I just ordered my SSD, ended up going with the Corsair F120 which performs close to the Vertex 3 according to anandtech anyway.. Bench - SSD - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
+ Rep for you for your efforts -

I'm glad it's working out for you! I do wonder though, seems in the other thread people have to switch to raid during first reboot in windows install. I wonder how you managed to stay in achi the whole way. Luck of the draw I guess.
-
dopebohy,
You never had to switch? Did you get any BSOD after the first reboot? Did you use Dell's Windows disks or plain non-branded Windows disks? -
And to add to the questions, did you install any drivers before you began the windows install?
-

I had everything installed on my SSD on AHCI last night. Everything was working fine for a good 4~5 hours. Played a few games of HON, watched some hulu. I even rebooted a couple of times to make sure. Turned it off and went to bed. Now, I get BSOD when I reach the desktop. Auto-updates are off.
-
Very peculiar. So jestare managed to install windows in achi mode. Did you use the included DVD? And what driver version you using?
-
I used my own copy of Win 7 Ultimate. I'm using the latest drivers from Dell, the 267. I booted into safe mode, uninstalled the nvidia driver and I can boot into windows regularly now. I've tried doing a clean install with the provided nvidia driver, but it still crashes. At the moment I'm stable, but with no nvidia graphics driver.
-
-
Updated. The C300 was working flawlessly in my desktop, so I know it's not that. Like I said, uninstallation of the nvidia drivers stopped the numerous BSOD's I was receiving.
-
Well, without any driver installed the laptop is kind of useless. Have you tried using drivers from laptopvideo2go?
-
-
I had installed all drivers and had firefox running without an issue, I went to install .net framework for the command center application and got a crash but not a BSOD, went to install command center anyway and BSOD.... I think the issue might be with microsoft updates (SP1, .net) i'm going to try installing SP1 and .net framework before anything else
-
-
Let I remember laptopvideo2go has modded inf files that you just use to overwrite the original. Nothing beyond that.
-
never got to DL sp1, I downloaded .net framework from the site and it BSOD -
Yep M17X R3 is Chipset 6 series aka Sandy Bridge aka 2 x SATA 3 ports
LOL wrong thread sorry -
Currently My machine is operating at a stable level. Everything is installed EXCEPT the 3D vision Drivers. it seems this is directly an issue with the 3D vision drivers. not sure where to go from here though to find a fix.
-
So what driver did you settle with?
-
After installing the modified drivers from laptop2go, i chose the 270.28, windows booted to desktop and running fine. Unfortunately, the 3D aspect no longer functions when I attempt to set it up.
-
Well this helps me I guess, I don't have a 3D display. I wish we could make someone at Dell/Alienware aware of this issue before people start sending their systems back because of this.
-
Makes me wonder how Dell sets up their ssd.
-
Yeah, I still have the stock Dell installation on the HDD. I really like the speed gained when it's installed to the SSD however. I'm going to be using the SSD until someone figures out how to get 3D working again, then I'll wipe the HDD and use it as a complete secondary.
-
Try the 267.46 from LaptopVideo2Go. I know they're a bit out of date, but I've had 3D running just fine with the exact same hardware setup as you, BSOD and crash free.
Edit: Er, almost the same, no Blu-Ray. -
Dopebohy.. You still alive?? lol
-
Ok well, got my vertex 3 120gb max iops. Threw dell windows disc in, set to ahci, and let it do its thing. Windows installed successfully. No BSOD yet. Now I just gotta figure out which drivers to use.
Edit: Decided to format. Now windows will bsod on first reboot. Back to the RAID option. Guess you only get lucky the first time. =p -
Edit: Thanks for the suggestion storm, worked out perfectly. +rep -
So it seems the AHCI is a no go yet lol
-
I had a lucky fluke with ahci earlier. But now I'm on the raid boat like everyone else. But honestly, windows still boots up in like 10-11 seconds, so there wasn't any noticeable difference.
Edit: Hey storm, or Jestare, I downloaded the 267.46 drivers from there and replaced the ini file with default one. Driver installed fine but how did you get 3D to work? When I run the wizard it insists that I need to download the drivers from the main site. Which naturally the driver from nvidia doesn't work since it doesn't detect a geforce. -
I went to install the 267.46 drivers for the 460m but the nvidia installer says "INSTALL CANNOT CONTINUE: This graphics driver could not find compatible hardware"
Anyone got any advice? -
Make sure you download the modded inf file, and then overwrite the original after you extract the original driver to a folder.
I think i my fixed the SSD BSOD nvidia driver issue!
