    Currently, I have an i7 620M in my M17X R2.
I just wonder can I upgrade it to i7 740 or above level.

    Thanks very much

Yep. You can upgrade it all the way to the 940XM, although the 920XM is the same chip with a slightly lower multiplier. It costs much less as well. You'll notice a big difference between an XM and your current CPU.

    920XM

    Thanks for your reply.
I heart from someone said because i7 620M is under HM55, but I7 920 is under PM55. Therefore, it wont make the upgrade possible.
Dont wanna spend money on a new CPU but doesnt work.
Does what i said make sense?

What the other person said is not correct. I personally upgraded from a 720QM to the 920XM, so I know it can be done. M17x-R2 is 100% compatible with the 920XM, I promise you. When the R2 was still available, the 920XM was actually an option from the factory.

But the point is only 620M and i5 CPU is using HM55, i7 740 and above are using PM55 motherboard. That's what I worry.

That's not true, the r2 uses only one type of motherboard - the pm55. If it did use the hm55 we would be able to use the intel hd graphics on the i7/i5/i3 chips which is not possible.

Check cpuz... under mainboard it says pm55.

I had an i7 620m and upgraded to an i7 920xm last month.

OK, good. Thanks oogamer. Everything I've been reading was inconclusive. It looked like both chipsets supported the 920 regardless though.

Yeah, you can upgrade to the 920xm with no issues.

Also, if you are interested..... I have an OEM 920xm FS in this forum.

You can check the thread in my sig if interested

I just purchased a 920xm a few days ago to exchange for my existing 720qm. Ive already changed the thermal paste and and done the ultimate cooling mod, what other dis-assembly is required to change the CPU out? Is there a write up on this task?
