I would get the 6990m, at high ambient temps you are almost guaranteed to hit the 580m 77c throttle. There is a chance Dell will fix the issue with a bios update, but if they don't then you will have issues.
The 6990m has no throttle, so it will work for sure. -
Im gonna purchase mine in May, do u suppose any new card might come around the same price or any chance of the throttling issue to get fixed?
-
By then we should have Ivy Bridge as well as the next gen GPUs - 7970M & GTX 675M (probably with issues of their own...).
-
My price range would still be 2100 $. I cant haggle as im living in india and calling a sales rep in Us is impossible
will invy bridge be same priced? -
GeoCake how is it going with your 580m ?
-
^^Dude, don't go there

Hate to tell you this but the 6990m is not available here in India. We can only customize the hdd (min 750gb option here) ,ram (min 8gb option here) and wifi card.

@galbatrox, yaar (friend) relax, we are always here, forget repasting wagerah (etc.)....get a cooling pad and be happy....as regards to an ssd, dont know the mrkts in india, but buy the ssd from the US, you cant get it any cheaper..unless you buy someone's ssd from NBR
ps the advantage to the 6990m (apart from no throttle) is that you can physically disable the GPU..sure drivers nai waath lagaa di hai (have really -bleeped-)... but everything runs with a guaranteed 5 hrs on the igpu...all this from a guy who likes nv gpu's...apna khiyaal rakho (tc of yourself) -
tu US me raheta hai? Konsa cooling pad use karun? bohot confusing hai.
6990M has driver issues? -
First of all, tempting as it may be, DONT buy the 6990m.
Dell India is not like Dell US. If you have an issue with the graphics card and you will most probably have one because of the heat, you can NOT avail warranty. (I have had to get my cpu, gpu, their heatsinks replaced. And my laptop is again dead. Motherboard, ac adapter and touchpad replacement pending for tomorrow.)
Dell India has the following stance on overseas warranty- if you buy a laptop from outside India which is also manufactured with similar parts in India then they will repair your laptop in India itself. However, if you buy a laptop whose parts aren't available here, then it is your responsibility to courier the laptop to Dell US. No idea how you will get it back.
I am 100% sure about this, having talked to the higher ups of the corporate office of Dell.
I am sure that some time or the other, your laptop will face a gpu problem because of the heat. And if you have a 6990m you will be in big trouble.
That is why i didnt buy from hidevolution.com or from others in USA on the NBR marketplace.
Now as for your concerns about the accessories-- buy from ebay.in. In there check out geb(global easy buy). There is a seller called i2cworldinc. You can trust them. I have bought products worth more than 50k from them. They are excellent.
Another good site is flipkart.com but even costlier than geb in some cases, whereas it can be much cheaper in other cases.
Thermal paste used- arctic silver 5, icd24, prolimatech pk 1 (recommend this).
Cooling pad- cryo lx. Again bought from ebay. In this product you dont have to worry about warranty much because in case the fans break down, you can easily replace them.
However my friend bought CM Storm SF-19 Strike Force cooler. He is very satisfied with this. It also has usb 3.0 ports. Compare the reviews for the two on the net and decide.
Mouse- Logitech g700. You will have to risk warranty. However logitech makes reliable products. (that is why i didn't buy the cyborg rat 9 or razer mamba. Mamba costs 9k here btw!!. Logitech 5.5k).
For the mouse, I already broke the receiver once, but new authentic ones are available on ebay for about 1.5k.
Now the big question-- which ssd in INDIA?? BUY CRUCIAL M4 256 gb. Dont even think of sandforce based drives. SSDs are costly and if yours breaks down, you will have a lot of trouble sending it to USA for warranty. crucial m4 is the most reliable one. Mine runs buttery smooth. Touch wood.
Dont go for kingston. Dont even think about OCZ. And no Intel either. Crucial only.
Ok, now about the 580m. I am using a .92v vbios. No overclocking. I have played Battlefield 3 as well as each and every other game on ULTRA with minimum throttling. All i need to is raise my laptop but putting it on the cooling pad. I dont even need to switch on the cooling pad.
Skyrim did push the gpu a lot and also caused throttles. For this- simply install Hwinfo beta version and run the fans on maximum for the duration of gameplay. It is very easy. You will not face any further issues.
Last word of caution- my room temps are around 31'C. If you are in a place with higher temps, then-- well there is nothing you can do then!! (use an Air conditioner to lower room temps).
m17x is the only laptop of its kind in India. You might face some troubles but it is worth it.
Or consider a macbook pro 17" if you dont game much. (please no comments on windows vs mac or AW vs apple)
One more thing- try to stick to english. There are a lot of people here who are very knowledgeable, so if you speak in english, they can give inputs too.
Hope i was able to help you. -
Just as soon as the engineering apps I use get ported over to OpenCL instead of being CUDA-only and AMD has an equivalent to Optimus, I'm jumping over to Southern Islands (AMD's 28nm GCN architecture), though Nvidia/Kepler still has some fan boys: Nvidia Kepler vs AMD GCN has a clear winner | SemiAccurate

the only issue i forsee with the 580m is possibly optimus related (i had a horrible time with gta 4,me2) secondly if one was to flash a custom bios....won't that itself affect warranty..if the gpu goes
i agree 100% with the option to go with crucial m4, cheap (nowadays..see ebay or if us ..then newegg...someone posted here newegg had some deal on the m4) reliable and quite a few users here in nbr are using it...myself included
if u ask me the 6990m is better with a cooling pad, or even a few cm. off the table (for a cheaper option)...no hardware modding... it simply works... i may have worried u in regards to the driver support..but it is not to worrisome, its just that some drivers were found to disable or interrupt the OSD.....i went with the 6990m because of all the optimus grief otherwise NV all the way.... -
No, flashing does not void warranty.
Is the OP even reading this thread anymore? -
Flashing does viod the warranty. But what whatever Dell doesn't know can't hurt you. Just don't tell them you did.
-
On battery and when not gaming I want Intel HD. Whilst gaming I want the 6990M. Simples, no bs. -
sorry chaos...didnt know the config available in india..... but then, i'd still want the 6990M...primarily in order to eke out better battery life. you need to create profiles and what nots.with the 580M but..with the 6990m...switch..and done -
Oh oh, this is not about 580m vs 6990m or optimus vs manual switching.
If the OP gets the 6990m then in case his system breaks down and he needs repairs, he will have to send it to Dell USA from India!!. For that reason i advised him to buy the only configuration available In India (which is 580m with 3d). This way, even if something breaks down, he will have on-door warranty. -
Chaos thanks for the replies, since im having some examinations i couldnt read in depth and reply fast.
please dont close this thread. i shall read in full and reply tmrw.
thank you -
Crylo lx seems like a nice option.
I think i understand what u mean, so ill stick to 580M. BTW if i get the non 3d one, can i get it repaired in India?
Im probably buying in June, so i hope the throttling crap gets fixed up :/
Im gonna stick to Crucial M4 128gb one + the stock 750 gb.
I dont think i would go for a mac , my dad used to own Mac book air 13in, but it wasnt as good as i thought it would. And though it looks sleek and amazing, it wasnt worth its cost.
sorry for the use of hindi, i got carried away there
