Hi. If I replace my gtx 770m with gtx 780m it will be just plug and play or I have to change the heatsink and bios? I have a aw 17

I beleive you received your laptop with a 240W AC, so you will need replacing the heatsink from 2 pipes to a 3 pipe. If you cannot find a original heatsink for Aw17, you can check my thread about mod heatsink from r3/4 to alienware 17

but for gtx 870m...that I saw it with 2 pipes?!

You need an ac adapter the gtx 770 comes with a 180w you need at least the 240w for the gtx780 .
-
gtx870m is not a gtx780m, and this first is a bit less powerfull than gtx780m, bigger numbers doesnt mean better performance or better Oc
but yes, both are 100W and using a 75w ( 2pipes) instead of 3 pipes will be maybe easely in overheating.
When i had a gtx485m on my r3, the gpu last only 2years due of overheating: this day of overheating, i forget to activate max fan speed. -
yeah, but now I am thinking for the gtx 870m...is cheaper...30% more performance then gtx 770m...and is 110w ...the gtx 770m is 100w....it will be ok?
I know I cant compare gtx 870m with gtx 780m...but It will be an improvement for the gtx 770m -
I checked the charger that my gtx 770m camed is a 240w...it says GA240PE1-00 model, so what will be my issues when I install a new gtx 780m with heatsink thermal paste, thermal pads....It will be plug and play and just install the drivers or...?

I see my alienware originally came with the gtx 765 i have pn fa180pm111 180w supply

Interestingly the AW i ordered that is coming with the lower spec 765m has a 240w adapter coming with it. Not sure if it's because i specced the 4900 processor or the 120hz screen. I have a 780m gpu located and plan to fit it when i get the AW.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M VGA upgrade in Alienware m17x - YouTube in this video 3x pipes, I sow my gtx 770m only 2 black pipes, did you test it? everything works? If it works with 2 pipes what are you scared of ?

Played a little with it on elder scroll everthing maxed and i was getting temps of around 75 max( 70 with 770), the fan whirling like no other. Surfing the web is fine and if it need be it would work but would rather have the 3pipe.. Still using the 900p screen so its not pushing the card, waitin on the 3d cable for my 120 mhz 3d screen >< Alienware called back said they should be shipping the correct heatsink

Hopefuly in 1 week mine comes! It will be a gtx 880m...cant w8 to put it to a test

I would strongly recommend ordering the correct GTX 780M heat sink to keep that GPU as cool as it should be. You will want an svl7 vBIOS to realize the true performance potential of this GPU, but I would get the heat sink first. The vBIOS mod will help to stop the asinine "adaptive" behavior (performance-killing throttling) that NVIDIA GPUs are famous for. This will be a big performance boost, but it will also generate higher temperatures when the GPU begins to function correctly with the vBIOS mod.

I order the correct heatsink what is roung with 3dmark because it's not running my gtx 780m...it's running hd 4600
If I change my gtx 770m with gtx 780m
