Recently my m17x R2 has been running super hot during gameplay. So hot that it would shut off at times. GPU-Z had some of the temps listed up to 100C (super duper hot, I know).

So I decided to open up my laptop and check out the thermal paste situation as well as kill any lingering dust bunnies. After pulling out both GPUs (2 x 5870s) I cleaned and reapplied some AS5. I was also shocked to see that the stock paste was layered on immensely to the point that it had leaked out all over onto the card.
After, I did the same to the CPU (cleaned/reapplied paste).

Once I put everything back together again and booted up my machine i noticed two things:
    1) my main issue - the computer boots up but the screen is pitch black. I even tried removing the slave video card by disconnecting the crossfire cable and removing the card completely but I still see nothing on the screen even with the primary card plugged in.
    2) secondary issue - on the touchpad bar the SCROLL and NUM LOCK buttons keep flashing whilst the CAPS LOCK just stays solid colored.

I'm extremely bummed out about this. Did I ruin my video cards? :[

the the LED code for the LCD. i believe you need to reseat your video cables(the 2 cables coming out of the left side of the monitor)

if not then wipe the thermal paste of your cards and use a paste that is non capacitive like arctic mx2 or mx4

Try reseatting the video card also. If you still have the same issue a warranty replacement may be needed so please send us an e-mail to [email protected]. Please include your tag, phone and a brief description of the issue and we'll take care of you ASAP.

Dude, you nailed it on the head. It totally was the LCD cables not being seated.
Oh man, the relief I feel now is immense! Thank you soooooooooo much!
I really appreciate it. I was about ready to drive my car off a cliff if I broke my boobear. :D

It looks I am having the same problems with my R2 with 5870 cards. I'm getting temps in the same general region, and I've had the computer shut down on me a couple of times. Did your application of the paste work? Are the temperatures down?

Yes repasting does work and should be done on a regular basis aswell as opening the laptop and getting rid of dust bunnies and blowing the vents with compressed air, this ensures your laptop will stay cool
