I had a long and frank conversation with a Dell Technical Support team today and discussed a case of mine which requires Dell to issue me a new Whole Unit Replacement. This info is from Dell India.
My original spec of M17x is as in my sig. I was negotiating the various models as when it was revealed to me that the RGBLED screen is indeed in the works for M17x.
He read out all the specification details of the screens available...
Monitor:
17.3 inch HD+ With LED 220 nit resolution 1600 x 900
17.3 inch FHD With LED 300 nit resolution 1920 x 1080
17.3 inch FHD+ RGB LED 300 nit resolution 2176 x 1224
17.3” inch FHD With LED 300 nit resolution 1920 x 1080 with nVidia 3D vision
Graphics
I was not accustomed to this resolution and so was skeptical..But I goggled and found various documents and postings dated end of February which mentions all these panels.
I hope some of you can shed more light on this matter as time goes by.

If that happens, I'll be sad I got the 3d model
Wanted to try out 3d and have a brighter screen, but RGB is worth than worth it -
-
thats pretty crazy! i hope it does come out asRGB LED
-
I wonder how hard it would be to get them to send out a RGB after just ordering with the 1080 wled. (Assuming paying for it isn't a problem of course)

If they release the RGB, can I purchase the screen directly from them and have them issue a dell tech to install it?

I am pretty sure if this information is being revealed in India, the same must be available elsewhere in more established markets like the states...Infact this info slipped out because I was negotiating on the available GPUs. As of now a non 3d or Amd Radeon 6970m is not available in India. He then briefed me about a recent meeting on this matter and added about RGB Screen too. Initially I thought he maybe misquoting..but when he mentioned the resolution I was dumbstruck..coz I have never heard or seen such a resolution b4.
If this come through it will really give me lots of peace..because I am dealing with both Dell Malaysia and Dell India on my case.
I hope those of you who have better connections can perhaps work your mojo and get this matter out into the light further...for it gives some hope. -

Screw the cost, it's worth it. I'd honestly fork over $1,000 to have the perfect laptop with the perfect screen. I can't see how it'd be much more than that.
-
$300 upgrade if you purchase new m17x ? worth it
$1000 to replace if you already have 1080p ? not worth it. I'd rather get a nice 30" external IPD monitor rather than that RGB.
Unless you find a way to make Dell replace the screen and charge the difference... -

I could make the same argument for people who spend $1,000 to upgrade to extreme processors. For them it has functionality worth that price. For me, the RGB offers functionality worthy of that price.
Maybe not for you, but I'm talking about me.
Also, that was a random figure pulled from my butt. We have no idea what they'll charge for the screen, although I'm sure it will be quite expensive. -
When my original L501X was shipped to me with a 720p screen, it was going to cost me $1030 CAD to have them ship me a 1080p with a tech to install it.
I don't mean to be a downer, but I highly doubt it would cost less than $1300 if it ever comes into existence. -

I'll...erhmm, just start saving now then... -

Don't forget the advantages of 120hz over 60hz.

So how would that resolution look? It seems pretty odd and I've never heard of it before.
-
I've never heard of that resolution before either.
Also, this screen would not fit in current r3 design without distortion.
edit: I stand corrected, it is the same ratio.
1920/1080 = 2176/1224
~1.78 = ~1.78 -
That's a fairly significant increase in width. Would they have to compensate by widening the Laptop's body even further? There's not much extra space on the sides of the E2E display as it is.
-
no, it would increase the pixel density.
-
Ah ok, I see now, thanks for the info. I really hope this truly does make it to the R3, that might be the deciding factor for me on purchasing it.
-
Grrr, I hope it won't be THAT bad to replace the 1080p wled with the RGB if they do introduce it as an option. RGB ftw.
