Does anyone know if the RGBLCD Truelife screen can be installed in an R3? I love the screen on this computer and if I bought an R3 I would want to swap the screen over if I can.

no different aspect ratio to start with. Another member Villosa has just managed to mod a B+RG screen into the M15x and he's just bought a R3...

I was thinking of taking the whole lid / screen assembly off the R2 and fitting it to the R3. Just disconnect it electrically and remove it at the hinges. The aspect ratio would not matter then so long as the physical dimensions are the same.

    physical dimensions are very different.

The R1 and R2 are the same thing, but R3 has radically different design.

It is like comparing iphone 3gs with iphone 4.

I can guarantee you that unfortunately you can use the R2's RGB on R3.

Are they different? I guess they must be. Well it was a really good idea and I was all excited about it until you went and popped my bubble :) Thanks just the same Dellienware.

Lol well it would be great but dell just doesnt..

Ihate the new design of the sandy bridge models. The grills look horrible as they are retracted to inside.

My only complaint is that Dell cancel'd production on R2's when I won my laptop. I was expecting an R2 w/ rgbled and 5870's xfire'd but...got a r3.

Well, least I only spent $550 to upgrade the gpu.

Like I said in my above post. The aspect ratios and dimensions are the same for the B+RG screens which are the same 95% gamut ones used in the Clevo systems. A guy did it in a M15x and he may do it for the R3 as well. I theorise that it is indeed possible to have at least that screen in the R3 and probably not the RGBLED. Shame I'm getting the 120Hz or else I'd do it.

zoolian982 are you happy with the R3? I have had my R2 since last November and it has given me nothing but trouble. I have had 4 new graphics cards, 3 new motherboards, new ram, and new Bluetooth cards and a couple of other things in there as well have been replaced and it is still not working properly. Dell, to their credit, keep sending someone around to replace bits occasionally but the experience has not been a good one and I am worried what is going to happen when the warranty runs out so I am looking around for a replacement now. I probably won't buy a new lappie until after Christmas but I am looking and asking questions now.

I actually love my R3, the only problem I had was blue screens due to crap Optimus system. I would prefer an R2 just because of the aluminum chassis. Otherwise, the R3's fine, just make sure the lowest card you get is at least the 6970 so you can play most games on High.

Why wouldn't you push for the whole new replacement system after multiple repairs and parts replacements and your system is quite new if I got right. You should be offered an m18x with XM CPU

So it was true when rumored back in the day when people say AW might turn for plastics..

SO the material like for the lid and all are plastic?

It seems and feels plastic. I think it's hopefully only for the R3. Alienware's probably cutting back on costs since the 17x isnt their top of the line laptop at the moment. Hence the cutdown on RGBled and Anodized Aluminum to Plastic and a really bright 1080 screen.

Has the addition of all this plastic resulted in a reduction in weight?

    Yep.

I'd rather have aluminum and dual gpu's though. Kind of envious of all the 2x 6990-ers.

My next laptop will only have a single GPU. It will be the biggest, hottest and most expensive GPU I can fit in there but it will be all alone in there. Crossfire is one of the things that I have been having problems with.

Did I mention that in about 25 years of playing with computers, both laptop and desktop, I have had two computers with ATI cards (that does not include my first computer which was an Apple IIc because I have no idea who made the video card, probably Apple) and both have given me trouble. :)

I currently have my eyes set on an Nvidia 580M or the latest Nvidia incarnation when I get around to buying a new computer.

Got my R3 on Friday and was able to test out the panel used in the M15x mod. The purpose was to see if the 900p R3 ribbon was compatible with a 1080p screen. Sure enough, it was, in glorious B+RGLED.

Will be researching 17.3" screens soon and putting together a guide. Dell seriously need better quality LCDs.

    Some sneak peaks.
