so you can buy the GPU GTX 980 8GB either from ALIEXPRESS OR EBAY whichever is comfortable for you go for it and then you need to follow the following steps i have attached the stock Vbios for dell alienware 17 r1 tested no power throttling and i have also added nvdmi.zip for the drivers 446.14 just replace this file in display.driver after extracting the setup using winrar in any directory then disable the driver signature by holing shift while restarting manually then Press 7 and then open setup and install the driver you will get a pop up install the driver anyway just click install and you are good to go

As for Vbios flash i have attached nvflash that i used on my 980
1st backup your old bios from gpu z it's pretty easy

unzip in anywhere and place the Vbios in the directory then open cmd using the address bar just type cmd and you will get cmd on your screen afterwards follow these steps

disable gpu in device manager and then

    nvflash -6 GM204.rom

    after that
    after a moment
    press Y to continue
    again Y

and don't do anything at that point just wait for flash to complete
and then enable the gpu in device manager and restart

as for drivers after replacing the file you can install the drivers as mentioned above do it before the vbios or after as per my testing it doesn't make any difference.

it is then you would need heatsink with 5 pipes and moreover better paste , pads and new psu 330w and a better cpu otherwise there is no point to go with 1060/1070 with processor stuck at 3.5 ghz

Mmmm right now I have the 1060 install not with the 3 Pipe Heatsink, but with the 2 pipes one. Without any issue at all gaming, the highest temp registered were 75 degrees. With the 240 PSU should run fine.
I came from an 765m and I'm multipling framerates per 2.

The core runs cooler the other parts not so much. Moreover i guess for 1070 330w

You will not benefit from a 330w AC adapter. MXM slot does not output more than 115w and the CPU cooling is not capable of dissipating more than 100w of power. Add in efficiency and a 240w is fine.

I have 5-tube heatsinks for both cpu and gpu .. have been increased. what I would miss to switch to a 1070 would be the power supply I have a 240w one and surely a 1070 wants a 330w one .... and then I'm afraid it's not so compatible since everyone says that if you don't have a panel 120hz do not work ... my display and a simple full hd at 60hz ... anyway my friends thank you very much for all the information given !!! heartily !!

thank you very much brother for the advice, just one question ... these modified files for every official driver that nvidia releases? because I see that he has released a new one .... and then the card works correctly without limits with games or is it adapted and has problems?

Ho visto che ora NVIDIA ha rilasciato un nuovo driver .. quindi il file mod non è compatibile con il nuovo 451.48?

You need to add your hardware ID into the list of compatible configurations and then add it to the list of Strings at the bottom of the .inf file.

What is your Hardware ID? Go to Device Manager - Display Adapters - Right Click on your 1070 - Properties - Details - Select Hardware ID from the Dropdown. There will be 4 lines. Just let me know what the first or second line says

Hey, I was wondering if this will work with Alienware 17 with specs:

    intel core i7 4700MQ
    60hz full hd display
    PSU 240W
    BIOS A17

The laptop is currently using Nvidia Geforce GTX 765M. Wondering if the upgrade to 980M is possible.

I've just installed a 980m in my AW17 with 60hz and the gpu fan won't spin up under load.

Did the diagnostics and the fan works, it just won't spin up under load in windows.

    Any ideas?

Hi again, i made a mistake, i was using another nvflash... I use the nvflass bypass, the same as yours, everthing ok buuut, when i restarted the image display is weird, with weird lines and then black screen. I restarted again, so windows automatically disable the 980m and i have display again, if i enable the 980m appears the weird lines and then the black screen. So, i need another rom?, maybe your gpu is different than mine? another version?

    Hello everybody.
I hope someone can help me.
I installed the Dell 980m 8gb GPU in my Alienware 17R1. (240W AC adapter, 60Hz display)
The GPU is recognized in the BIOS (A17) and also in Windows 10. The problem is that the GPU fan does not turn!
The GPU fan only works in the BIOS error diagnosis.
Cavkic on page 3 probably had the same problem.
Can someone help me solve this?
Is the problem here also with the vbios?

@Baqir do you have a solution for my problem?

    Thank you for your support.

Usually it's a vBIOS issue. I would try a few versions from TechPowerUp to see if one works.

What does it show in the Device Manager? Does it say 980M or Microsoft Basic Display Adapter?

Thank you for the quick reply Maxware79 :)
In the device manager and in the gpu-z the gpu is recognized and displayed as 980m. The GPU also works when playing, but without a fan it gets hot) -: I can read the temperature with various programs. The GPU fan is not displayed (Argus Monitor, SpeedFan, GPU-Z) and therefore cannot be read out.
What can happen if I import a wrong vbios?
    I've never done that!

    Am I right here?:

    Current GPU-Z:
    VBios version 84.04.85.00.0A
    Subvendor Dell
    Device ID 10DE 13D7 - 1028 05AA
    I've tried several Nvidea drivers.

    Many thanks (-:

Ok, I have finally joined the club :)

Got this a while ago and installed it just yesterday..
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/NVIDIA-GTX980M-8G-MXM-SLI-N16E-GX-A1-Video-Grafikkarte-für-Notebook-Laptop/142625057691?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Price was ok and when receiving the card I looked and it seemed unused, very clean. It arrived pretty quick too from China.

Have cicichen allcopper heatsink with 1mm Gelid 12W/mK pads + Kryonaut paste.
Maybe I try Conductonaut later but with high cfm fans, pwm switch mode and U3 modded cooler I think temps won't be an issue.

So, folowed the steps, install card, read hardware ID, mod inf file for the latest 452,06 driver, disabled driver signature and installed just fine. I was in SG mode so when switching to PEG had to inf mod again and reinstall driver since the Hardware ID is different.

Now, I was wandering...should I have done DDU again? (I did DDU when my R9 died) Beeing the same driver I thought not.
Also I changed previously modded inf for the PEG one...but was I supposed to add new ID and keep the SG one? Or I have to inf mod and reinstall if I want SG?

    I benched it
Unigine Heaven extreme- 1409 (SG), 1374(PEG)
    Sky Diver 19098
    Fire Strike 7262
    Time Spy 2719

On par with my Lenovo Legion 1650 card but that BGA crap throttles as any BGA crap.
Even after I repasted that excrament excuse of thermal paste.
I will have to do some Throttlestop magick on that one.

Now the vBios is as in the Gpuz pic below, the one that came with the card.
I can see from HWinfo it drawing mostly 80W with some short spikes going to 103w.
Havent gamed so I will keep an eye on that and report later.
If I understand, that can be improved so I am asking for some help here.
    Thanx!

So did the DDU again and reinstalled with both sg and peg IDs.
Now its closer to 90W working.
Did not do vBios flash yet. What should be the TDP of this card normally?
Should I slightly overclock with Afterburner?

Hello, If the card is recognised in the BIOS and Device Manager then you're in good shape. the modded driver can be tricky if you've never attempted it before but we'll get it sorted for you. The laptop can sometimes find a compatible driver online but it's usually an old one. 356.xx or 382.xx Can't quite remember which one it was.

Can you go into the Device Manager - Display Adapters - Right click on the 980M (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter) - Properties - Details - Select Hardware ID from the dropdown.

Post what the first line reads. You need this hardware ID to mod the driver and we'll go from there.
