I'm at work right now so I won't be able to do anything for a while.
Did you want to try modding one yourself? I can walk you through it

It's ok I don't mind waiting, would you be able to do it for me? If that's the easiest way and you don't mind I would rather go that route. If not it's ok I can definitely give it a try.

Yeah, I can do it for you no worries. When it's done I'll post a dropbox link and directions how to install it

May not be for a while though. Got a bit going on

It should do. Did he post the full driver or just the modded inf?
If it's just the inf then you'll have to insert this into the Nvidia driver file before installing.

Sorry, I haven't had much free time this week.

I appologize. I think I misread it. I thought you had posted one for the original poster but after looking at it again it doesn't look like it.

This should work. Click on the link and save the file to your C: drive. I've had a few drinks tonight so fingers crossed.
First you need to disable driver signature enforcement.
Navigate to the International folder of this driver. double click on the Setup.exe at the bottom.
Accept the red driver signature warning and install the driver

    Hey guys,
Got my 980M installed but I can't install the latest driver. What info is needed for me to make it work?
    Thank you

P.S. Nevermind, I edited the nvdmi file and everything installed. Can I just keep that moded file for future driver installation? Thank you

You'll need a modded nvidia driver to get the latest drivers. You can try to learn yourself using the guide below and I can walk you through it. Once you learn, it only take about 5 mins. I can make one for you but I've been a bit busy lately and it takes a while for the files to upload to Dropbox.

Yes, thank you very much. I did it and it worked. Was wondering if it's worth doing vbios mod or no. What are the pros and cons of it?
    Thanks

How can I adjust the fan to turn on at certain temperature? With MSI afterburner, it doesn't allow me to adjust the GPU fan.
    Thank you

I tried with that but it only controls my CPU fan. I just got brand new turbo fans for both CPU and GPU 10.7CFM. Super happy with them. Both work properly. Just wanted to see if I could control the fan on the GPU to make it cooler. Currently at 45 celsius with normal usage. Nothing crazy.
    Thank you

There is no native fan control on the Ranger. You make do with software or create your own bypass switch

It sounds like your card could possibly have the AW18 Slave vBIOS on it. Use GPU-Z to find out your vBIOS version and then you can look it up on TechPowerUp. You can also download NVFlash from there and find a different vBIOS

    Alienware 17 R1 (2014)
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
    Intel-Core i7 4710MQ
    60hz Full HD Display
    BIOS A17

Laptop updated to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M. Power supply updated to 240 watts. CPU heatsink updated to 5 pipe copper, video card heatsink updated to 5 pipe copper. Thermal pads and thermal paste installed according to instructions.

    Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05AA1028 (GTX 980M)

Fans disassembled and cleaned for max airflow.

Attempted several versions of NVIDIA Drivers 496.76, 496.49, 472.12, 461.09

nvdmi.inf edited on each version, installation successful but after each installation and consequent reboot, it produced the same result: After reboot - "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

Downloaded several VBIOS's from the support page and flashed, no change with aforementioned issue. NVFLASH used to restore original VBIOS.

I followed all the instructions provided and spent hrs. researching this issue on YouTube and net. I am unable to move forward. I'm not sure if I am missing something, but I am now certain I need help as I am not able to move past this issue.

I ran into the same issue when I modified .inf for original GTX 860M video card. Problem persisted with NVIDIA Drivers 496.49, 496.13, it was only after I modified and installed 472.12, that "Code 43" issue went away and I was able to use modified driver to its full potential.

Do you know or not if this will work in the Alienware m17x r2 or not? im kinda curious as to whether i should buy one or not. the gtx 970m did not work. all i got was distorted colors on my display. Now i have a gtx 970m that i have wasted money on because i purchased it from ebay and cant return it.
