Hello, Just purchased the intel ultimate n 6300 for 30 bucks instead of 70 from dell, and i just needed help installing it on the m17x r3, thanks

Instructions direct from Dell: Documentation
-
go to intel website and download drivers there.
If you wanna use Dell driver you have to pay $70 for the
wireless card from Dell!
I m on the mobilephone so it is pain to send link!
Hope this help.
Edit: here is the driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...18748/eng/ICS_Ds64.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=18748 -
Well, I mean actually putting the chip in the system, I dont have a clue to the first thing to do to figure it out and I really dont want to screw anything up, cost me a little to much lol, thank you for your responses, thank you livid for the information about to try it now, wish me luck lol
-
Will any Intel 6300 work? Are they all the same?
-
Im pretty sure, im about to try it now ill let you know when done
-
Wow, ok so I get down to the last step taking the last screw out of the keyboard, and I guess the hulk must have put the screw in because I about stripped it getting it out
So I said forget it, ill let a pro take a whack at it, when I got it back together tried to turn it on it kept beeping with no display so I manually turned off and tried again, after rebooting a couple times finally got to desktop where the display colors seemed almost inverted and was missing icons on desktop and taskbar, rebooted one more time and now it seems to be ok ran a diagnostic from BIOS and seemed ok, hope it doesn't leave more problems next time I book up
Scared me that I was about to lose 3k for a 30$ part I will never mess with it again, I do have 4 year accidental tho, anyone know how much it will cost for a professional to install it? -
People like you are good - you keep my ever-growing opinion in check that anyone can do computer stuff when given good directions. Thank you.
You really don't need to pay a professional. If you really can't do it, ask any one of your friends who is remotely tech savvy. Have any of your friends ever built their own computer? If so, they can do it for you in 15 minutes.
My guess is someone at a computer shop would charge you $25-50 to install it. -
Ok, well I received your much needed wisdom a little to late, I took it to geek squad when I already knew they were overpriced, idiots. They tried to charge me 50$ but it still came to 40. After waiting a a day and a half I finally received it.
I asked the guy who returned it to me if who ever worked on it installed the third antenna, and he told me my laptop doesn't have 3 antennas, I researched it enough to know that it does and he still very rudely persisted to tell me I only have 2, so I'm taking it back tomorrow morning and having them do it again. This is crazy, I'm just glad I did research or they would have pulled a fast one and now i know why so many people get crooked by companies like this that because they have a big name people are willing to put more trust in them.
I'm going to take it to them tomorrow, take it apart and if the antenna isnt installed I want a refund. Should have just taken your advice, I'm just not always the most confident person and felt safer to have a so called professional do the work and this is what it gets me.
I'm using it right now and not seeing to much improvement, maybe a little faster. I got the card because my router is far, I live in a 2 story house and need range, I'm getting 1/2 bars at the moment, and my router is probably 2/3 years old but its a linksys wrt610n, im not sure how good it is compared to routers now but it was nice when i got it, any advice on whether i need to upgrade or not would be appreciated by the way.
I would also like to know if the third antenna will make a noticeable difference for the range/speed? Also would upgrading my router make a difference as well. I'm paying for comcast at 6mb/s but since the modem is so far from where it enters the house the distance is slowing it down. I get about 750kb/s - 1.2mb/s usually, does this sound right? Would the antenna/new router increase my speed? Thank you and sorry for the long post, thanks again tapakidney with -
Yeah, honestly, computer "pros" are just like you, sometimes with the same amount or even less exeperience than you. The guy at BB is wrong and an idiot.
You SHOULD get the 3 antennae hooked up, or the 6300 wasn't really worth getting. I ASSUME the 3rd will help you, cause 2 stories from my router I get 3MB download speeds. I don't know if it's the 3rd antenna, the router, or a combination.
Your router may be fine. I suggest sitting by the router and going to speedtest.net. See what your speeds are. Is your service rated at 6 MBps or 6 mbps? 1 MB = 8mb (bytes vs bits). So, if you are paying for 6MBps service, the speedtest result should be 30-48 mbps. You could also hardwire to the router and see how good a speedtest you get to see what your connection is capable of.
If I were you I'd complain to a manager and get a refund, then try to install it again just using a better screwdriver that gives you better torque. Good luck and sorry for my snark earlier. -
Not all laptops have the third antenna, in many cases it is installed when the order is placed for the laptop with the 6300 card from factory, otherwise usually only 2 are installed.
My M17x only had 2 antenna's in it with the 5300 card I ordered.
In either case when the laptop was opened to install your card the bundle of antenna cables would all be there together be it 2 or 3 antenna's and not likely be missed by the tech unless he really was blind.
my point being be certain before going in screaming - I would open up the laptop and verify the number of antenna cables for the wireless card
its located under the palm rest on the M17x. -
Yea, my problem lies with finding a screwdriver small enough, but I will for sure do it myself, and wow had no idea about the difference in MBps or mbps, thank you for that bit of information. I went to speed test and it told me I had 12 mbps, but I was definitely not seeing anything close to that for my downloads.
and dave way to be the bearer of bad news, I ordered the stock card, so im guessing my case only have 2 antennas installed, is there anything i can do about this? I'm guessing that i just wasted alot of money for nothing, shoulda went with my instincts and spend the measly 70 bucks. Can dell upgrade this for me by installing the antenna? -
All R3's have 3 antennae. Promise.
And 12 mbps = 1.5 MB/s. Sounds about like what you've been getting, according to what you said. I'd really try hooking up to your router through the ethernet port if you want to see how fast your connection COULD be. -
It should have 3 antennae. I also ordered the stock WiFi card and was able to install my 6300 with no problems.
-
My M17x R2 had 3 antennae, can't see the R3 not having 3 as well.
-
Stock card had the extra wire where the card was installed.
I think the tech who did your card wasnt a real tech. -
Yeah, I agree with the folks above. Just replaced my I7-720Qm with a 920XM and I had a 3rd antenna neatly tucked away in little rubber holder. Now I'm not saying it's not possible that it only had 2 antennas, only saying that I ordered the standard dell wireless card and was one of the early adopters of the m17X-r2 and mine had a third antenna.
Good luck to you! -
My M17xR3 also has the third antenna, taped to the chassis with a plastic sleeve over the end of it. I havent decided if I care to update to the 6300 or not

hi guys i bought one of these off ebay not really reading description (IBM card)
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 wireless card A/B/G/N (eBay item 390307758326 end time 20-Jul-11 17:29:55 AEST) : Computers
installed in my m17xr2 and getting CODE 10 (cannot start device) with latest intel drivers.
any ideas -
Found these 2 drivers on Lenovo's site for 2 different models of their notebooks (that the ebay listing claims this card is for) one or the other may work:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77063
http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/ot/en/driversdownloads/Drivers_Show_2627.html -
it installs but a windows popup in toolbar to say windows can't install driver please contact manufacturer. -
I didnt download it, but I assume its some sort of installer package that unzips somewhere, in case its keyed to a specific model laptop you might be able to point the device manager at the driver itself to get it to install rather than relying on the Lenovo installer. Give that a shot.
-
saying already installed
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
grrrr emailed seller -
Wireless cards for laptops are a touchy thing, many of them have specific brands they will only work for, even if they are the same model between laptops.
EDIT:
Did you try the older driver that I linked for the Y560/460? -
tried the newer one
trying older one now
same deal windows popup
windows cannot install driver grrrr
think i may go back to 1520 wasted more money
noticed when taking out its missing alot of pins on the backside/bottom of the card and no MAC address printed on it. Fake???
