    Hi guys,

I installed the 8970m in my R3 last night and I managed to get it all working after a bit of battling. However the only way it works is by setting my display mode in the BIOS to PEG and the backlight intensity is not the same as it is in the other mode. Brightness controls still working but it looks like the screen is half the brightness,

Has anyone come across this yet?

The only driver I could get working was the MSI GX70 laptop ATI driver running Catalyst control centre 13.10. Could upgrade to 13.12 afterwards but the brightness issues remain.

Do you have a link to the drivers you were able to make work? I am having similar issues on a 6970M, and I have yet to get any drivers to work with PEG.

Hello mate, I'm interested in knowing what happened with your issues eventually? My 6970M just died (and I do mean JUST died :() so I'm considering my options at this stage.

What version of the 8970M did you get the 2gb or 4gb version? And is the brightness still half as strong?

I could use as much info as you can provide me with, I need to make an informed decision.

    Thanks a lot :)

    Hey,

Ryan_23 I strongly recommends buying 7970M instead because 8970M and M9 290X is rebranded 7970M (if you don't know it). And even better option than that is some Nvidia card and I think You know why ;)

Yeah I'm well aware of that thanks for the help though :)

The reason I'm looking into the 8970M is because I can get it for exactly as much as I would get the 7970M.

And as you said having dealt with HUGE driver issues I'd much rather get an Nvidia card. The only one I'll consider is the 780M and I'm currently looking at the potential issues I may have to face in moving from an AMD to an Nvidia gpu.

The 7970M works properly without any complications unlike the 8970M in the R3... The 8970M needs a certain vBIOS and if not, it won't boot, brightness levels can't be adjusted etc... I would personally get the 780M but that itself presents a whole different set of problems..

Apart from the sound card which needs to be disabled what other problems can I expect if I go with the 780M? And can they be resolved? Because at this stage I think my mind is set on it unless there are deal-breaking issues I won't be able to solve.

    Cheers

Not aware of any other problems other then the sound card... You'll need to mod the display driver inf to install the driver but it isn't difficult to do..
