I updated my igpu to the latest that intel had to offer. After it installed, I lost my Aero. (Also lost my OEM login background, but that was easy enough to fix) Nothing I did was bringing it back. Uninstalled Nvidia drivers, Aero came back. Reinstalled Intel driver, then the Nvidia driver. Aero went away.
The only thing I could do to get my Aero to stay was, go back to the resource disk version of the Intel HD 4000 Graphics. No perticular reason as to update them, I have no issues. Just like to stay on top of my driver updates.
Any ideas or others that had this problem with the new Intel graphics driver? Downloaded right from the Intel site.

Sometimes updating a device's driver will reset the Windows experience index. In that case, you would need to run the WEI assessment to try and restore aero.
-
Ya know, Never thought about that. Could it really be that simple?
-
what is aero?
-
The name given to the user interface (UI) for Windows operating system. The interface is referred to as Aero Basic, and Windows also offers a second version called Aero Glass which provides even more graphics intensive features but requires a 3D video card that supports DirectX 9, and it must have a Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM) driver. The Aero interface introduces translucent title bars, rounded edges, and stylish color schemes, amongst other features.
-
Simple? No. Ridiculous? Yes!
Any significant hardware changes and Windows will park Aero until you rerun the WEI assessment. I've had this happen before. God only knows why.
Also, certain themes will also stop Aero (like the high-contrast themes). -
Re running the WEI didn't work. Although I did jump my score from a 7.3 to a 7.6
Any other suggestions? I'm getting a "desktop window manager stopped working" message. -
If you haven't installed any new software, drivers, or updated the BIOS, then try running the System File checker. Instructions are here: Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
Desktop Windows Manager does manage Aero, so not having DWM running can be keeping Aero from running. Also, you can go into Control Panels -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Look for the DWM service and try right-clicking and starting it. -
System scan couldnt find any problems and I also tried your second option.
No difference to me i guess if i have to stay on old drivers. Just would be nice to have the updated ones. I did notice that with the update installed under Performance information and Tools\Visual Effects that there was no "Enable Aero peek, Enable desktop composition, or Enable transparent glass for me to turn on or off. Almost like the update didn't support Aero at all. -

I had tried this as well. I searched the google machine for a good 3 hours trying various different things. However, I did run into another issue on this webiste from a Sagar and Clevo forum that a guy had the same issue.
-
Which drivers you trying to run? The latest intel ones include a checkbox to force aero to work I think. But windows update 'updates' mine back to a older version in between the dell ones and the latest intel ones.
-
Intel HD graphics 4000 driver 9.17.10.3071, coming from 9.17.10.2932.
Edit: When going to Intel I let Intel search my computer for updates and it only listed one update for the graphics. So, i know I didnt download the version for prefessionals and IT folks. -
Yeah thats the latest one from intel, have you set windows updates to update everything (not just windows updates if that makes sense), it should install a WDDM 1.2 update from what I remember. It reverts the driver back to .2849 , could be windows 8 specific but I dont see why it wouldnt apply to windows 7.
-
It says on there website that this update is for Windows 7 and 8. i don't see why it wouldn't work as well. Although, as I exclaimed before. In the performance information and tools/visual effects, Aero Peek, Glass effect were not listed on the new update, as if this update doesn't support Aero.
Is this update even that big of a deal.? I'm never unplugged to power saver means nothing to me. And I use it to game so im always on my Nvidia anyway. Anything else this update could actually benefit me with? -
Should be ok with the slightly older one, dont think it will be any big deal. Just use whatever will be fine. Dont have aero so I can't comment on it specifically but everything else seems ok with the windows update version of the driver.

That made me think: since the 680M only kicks in when Optimus decides it is needed (or you tell it to run with a given program) - non-3D screen - how can I get the WEI to measure with the 680M instead of the Intel GPU?
-
It runs a DirectX test, it should just automatically picks the 680m over the hd4000 for me anyways. I have the non 3d screen, but windows 8.
-
How do you see if you have aero enabled or not?
-
I had the same issue and just enabled a new theme to bring back aero.
-
If you don't have ugly blue windows or the ugly blue task bar, you have Aero enabled.
I have tried doing that as well. I think it's the driver. After the update, there is no place to even enable the Aero. Almost like the update doesn't recognize Aero. -
Have you tried to switch graphics over to your 680m? It may just be a bug screw up on Intel's part.
-
You mean FN+F7? wouldn't that defeat the purpose of udpating the Intel graphics anyway?
-
True. But Intel hasn't been all that great with their iGPU drivers to begin with. If it is a bug with their driver, the only known solutions are to not use the Intel GPU or to uninstall the update and roll back to the earlier working driver and see if Aero works then.
-
Which is what I did right away was rolled back to the previous version. I'll wait to see if there will be a fix to this or wait until the next update and try that one. I couldn't stand looking at the ugly blue for more than 30 seconds.
-
Don't bash the blue. It's better than puke purple, believe me. I rethemed the Yahoo mail app for android from purple puke to neutral blue.
-
Great! I installed the new 15.3 drivers which were supposed to give a 10% boost in performance and now I have the exact same issue.
-
I just rolled my back. I didn't have any issues with the old ones anyway so that wasn't an issue. I'm just going to wait untill they fix this bug and I'll try again later.
-
If you have latest intel drivers, there is an issue with them. Lots of ppl are complaining; Check the forum: Windows* 7/8 Driver (32 & 64 bit) - Version 3071 - Intel® HD GFX 4000/2500
-
I can definitely see more performance and better battery utilization now though, so I will keep it over Aero. Hopefully they will fix it soon.
