Hi Guys,
Been having a strange issue with XTU... It keeps showing processor frequency as 0GHz when it obviously isn't. I'm really out of ideas on what to do.. Intel chipset software/MEI is also up to date and everything... Been trying for 2 months but I've given up now.
Thanks
Tom

Hi
which verson of xtu and windows are you using? -
I have latest version of XTU and Windows 7 64 bit... I've used the previous version with the 3940XM and never had this problem initally.. After 2 - 3 months, this started happening and now even with the latest version, this still occurs.. I read somewhere that the MEI driver being outdated can do this but I have the latest one (10. something)... Really out of ideas now..

So to be clear this is happening on all versions of XTU that work with your machine?
-
Well at least with the 2 versions I've stated above.. The 4.4 one which I was using first didn't have this problem at all... It only came later... I can't think of what is causing it..
-
BUMP!! Need ideas
-
BUMP!! Meaker any ideas??
-
It is definitely weird...but as long as the computer is actually running at advertised speeds I would shrug it off. Does it show the proper speeds when you benchmark or stress it with that software? Does other CPU monitoring software work properly?
-

Yes what do the likes of cpu - z show?
-
Yup, everything works perfectly... CPU-Z shows everything properly and my games work better then ever.. I just can't think off what is affecting this.. Maybe Chipset/Intel MEI drivers but all is up to date...
-
Same problem here on XTU, I have a 4820k with the sager NP9570 and premamod BIOS flashed. Drivers up to date but I can't get the CPU frequency level to show a value different from 0.

Just to let you guys know, I've found out that if I leave XTU open, set the laptop to SLEEP mode and than wake it right after, XTU will show the CPU frequency. I don't really know why...Funny thing is that on HWmonitor my GPU shows almost 10 Celsius degreese more than the standard idle temperature when I do this "trick".
-
You mean CPU or GPU? We are talking about CPU...
-
I made a mess with the posts
-
I mean CPU, sorry hahaha
the GPU temperature that I mentioned is just something that happens when I do this "trick", I just mentioned it because it's unusual but I ended up mixing words...!
-
Bump any ideas? Anyone? This issue is getting on my nerves

Have you tried to check if by doing this "trick" XTU shows your CPU frequency?
-
What bios version are you using? Do you have the same bios version that others use when overclocking? Check it out. You can try to uninstall xtu (follow the correct procedure), afterwards you can try and flash a different bios version. Or flash the same bios again. Also Bios may have some problems. You can use the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility version 4.2.0.8. Others have used this version with windows 7 and 8 with good results. Remember that there may be some issues with Xtu sometimes. There should be no reason why xtu to work correctly on your Laptop

If you have HWiNFO64, AIDA64, FanSpeed, RealTemp, HWMonitor, ThrottleStop or any other kind of system monitoring utility that automatically launches at Windows, try disabling them so they do not auto-run and then reboot and open XTU. Not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but any MSR or sensors that XTU needs to access that another program accesses ahead of XTU can cause strange conflicts with symptoms like this.

Ok this is weird.. When I disabled speedstep and my CPU became stuck on 1.2GHz, XTU showed the actual frequency... Once I enabled everything, boom it didn't... Something isn't right..

Have you tried an older version of xtu?
-
Nope tried the 4.2.8 version and same problem.. I think something in the OS is broken but I have no idea what it is..Mr. Fox likes this.

You may need to do a clean Windows install. I once (way back on Sandy Bridge 2920XM) had an issue where XTU and 3DMark11 mysteriously started malfunctioning and I could never fix it. I did a clean install and the problems vanished. Have you tried running sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f yet? If it is corruption, running those might rectify the problem and save you some time on a reinstall. Several times I have had 3DMark11 develop problems with crashing at launch and a checkdsk /f fixed that for me.

Nope that didn't work at all.. Tried both scannow and chkdsk... I am thinking of resintalling Windows but kind off upgrading to 8.1.. Do you think its worth installing it over Windows 7? -
It happens to me too.
I think this is something about windows update.
With clean new windows installation, the frequency shows well.
But I noticed right after windows automatic updates, XTU stops showing it.
I dont know which update is related though.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Interesting... I've noticed that sometimes after I put the computer to sleep and it wakes up, frequency shows up till the next restart....Mr. Fox likes this.

I had this problem on my old laptop. I've also got it on my brand new Clevo P651SG, which I only installed Windows 8.1 on this morning (clean install). So I really don't know if a clean install will do you any good. This isn't a major issue, at least. It's just a matter of something not displaying for whatever reason, and not the reflection of some underlying hardware problem.
-
Simple solution to that... clean install + gpedit.msc to cure the cancer from Redmond. During Windows Setup, disable all options that let the OS make decisions... kill literally everything in Windows Setup that is automatic or pitched as something to make you safer or help make Windows better. Start with a local account (you can switch to a Micro$lop account later if you like using the Windows 8 app crap). Install your drivers and programs, then create a clean install drive image with Macrium Reflect.
Manually install only critical security updates and anything else you think might be hard to live without for some crazy reason. Install updates just a few at a time with a manual System Restore Point between batches. Wait several days between batches. Hide all of the updates that you know you don't want so they are not cluttering your view in the Windows Update window. This should include all Windows Catalog drivers because they are generally garbage.
At the first sign of trouble, use your last Restore Point. If that still doesn't cure the cancer, restore the drive image. If you let Micro$haft make decisions for you, you can count on having a PC that runs like crap.

Can you specify which setting you think should be disabled in Local Group Policy Editor ?

I had the same problem, 0 GHz processor frequency, with my desktop system. The problem is with the Avast anti-virus software, specifically, with "hardware assisted virtualization." From the Avast UI, Settings -> Troubleshooting, then de-select "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" and restart. I now see the correct processor speed in Intel XTU. If you've a different anti-virus software installed, look for some settings regarding sandboxing, virtualization, etc.

Just tried this and I can confirm that this is the solution.. XTU now shows the proper frequency!!!
Thanks for sharing this!papusan likes this. -
Do you use Avast anti-virus software?
Have not seen other anti-virus software that creates such trouble earlier ..
-
Indeed I do use Avast... Can confirm that it is still working with this fix..papusan likes this.

What about hustle and bustle about upgrading to paid version? Or have you the paid version ?
Avast had a round of dispute with Windows update earlier this autumn. -
Had the same problem! Happy that I stumbled over this thread!
