I have a m17x-r2 that is about 3 years old. Apart from a few GPU fan changes I have had no major troubles with it. I use it often (several times a day) and close the lid between use, which triggers the laptop to go to sleep. It is plugged into to power all the time. Every now and then (I'd say about 50% with no apparent pattern), the laptop doesn't resume as normal from sleep (normally takes a few seconds) but instead goes completely dark for ~5 seconds, and then reboots as if though it were a desktop that had power interrupted. Windows event viewer offers no clues about the reason but does have an entry with "unexpected shutdown". I have not been able to detect any pattern to this behaviour. I have not installed any new software or drivers. I have tried with a different battery. I have run all built-in diagnostics program with no fails. I have searched this forum high and low and googled but found no solutions. Anybody had a similar issue and - perhaps more importantly - know of a fix?

Try updating the BIOS to the latest versions and reinstalling the video drivrs from dELL.com. BTW, what video card do you have?
