I tried searching the net and here to find a solution, and haven't had any luck.

My issue is every time I wake up my m17x r-4 from sleep/hibernate, it takes up to 5-6 minutes before the internet will function properly. I've tried directly plugged in and wireless, the results are the same. I've updated the drivers from dell and off the internet that I could find for ethernet and killer wireless card, but that hasn't helped either.

For a better example of what happens, I wake it up and lets say go to check my gmail...the site hangs or goes to an unavailable page, then I'll try a different site (espn, facebook, theverge, etc) and same result. However, SOMETIMES after wake up it works for a second or for a site or two, then hangs again. Then just magically a few minutes later its back to normal like nothings happened.

I've tried other pcs in the house, none have this issue (one is a samsung and another an HP, if any of that matters). So I don't think its the router. I've had the laptop for about 5-6 weeks, and I'm pretty sure it's been like this since then. I've tried turning off windows firewall, but that didn't have an affect either. It's finally got on my last nerve...

Any thoughts? Do I need to call Dell?

If you have any antivirus you should try disabling it.
Go to Device Manager and under network devices/Right click the network device you are using/ Properties/ Power management/ Uncheck "Allow Windows to turn off this device"
Go to Control panel and on the searchbar type "Power"/enter the power configuration and "Show More"/Use high performance.

If none of that works then I think that you can just turn off the computer because it will come back to Windows pretty fast and also it kills some applications running in the background.
Here is an article with further info about wireless connectivity dropping.

I get this on wireless mostly. But all I do is press the wifi hot key to disable wireless for a second and then press it again to re-enable. Internet comes back up pretty quick.

I suspect the root cause of this is a power management section of the wifi adapters settings.
