I am hearing a lot about the M18x getting dual 6990ms fairly soon (and even already happening in the UK!). I've had my M17xR3 for less than a week. Can I return it and reconfigure it with a single 6990m?

I googled some comparisons between the desktop 6850 and 6870 (which is basically what the 6970m and 6990m are). The 6990 should be a 9% improvement according to my BRIEF research. If that is correct then I wouldn't pay more money for a 6990, but if the 6990 was the same price and just replaced to 6970, then why not.

As to if you should return or not, I can't say, is 9% worth the hassle or not? How much more will it cost? You can return it, but they can charge restocking fees. Give them a story about the item not being up to snuff or something and they usually waive them.

I would wait until the new set of GPUs come out at the end of the year/early next year. They should have a smaller process, so they should run cooler and be much faster at the same time. I plan on waiting maybe another year before I upgrade.

ATI's Wimbledon Q2 2012 is what I am looking forward to.

Then you can wait forever. There will always be something better to come.

I meant that I'd rather return it now and get the better GPU while I can. I only bought my M17x when i did because nothing was announced and I thought the next major update would come late fall/winter time when it would have been too late to buy a college laptop. If this 6990m is coming out in july/early august, then I might was well return this one and get the 6990m while i still have the time!

    My post was for Bartlett.

Signs are that the 6990m is comming soon, so better hold out. 12 July is the latest rumor.

From what I've read the 6990M will use the same socket as the 6970M, however is there any indication, purely by logic or otherwise, that the next ATI GPU will use MXM 3.0 as well?

I'm pretty happy with the 6970M right now and will overclock it as necessary when I run into any issues with it not being able to play my games at the resolution/detail levels I would like, and after that obviously I will upgrade. Just curious if we know what direction the next chipset after the 6990M will take.
