Hello: I currently have an r2 with a 7970m. i tried doing dual 7970's but ran into problems (most likely I got a faulty card). Anyways, its time to upgrade, and am thinking of going with nvidia right now?

I am considering going to an 880m (since i read its performance is similar to having xfire 7970m). Anyways, its very pricey, so i am wondering how it compares to a 780m or any otehr card thats a substantial upgrade from my 7970m.

    Thanks in advance.

780m and 880m are similar to each other. I would say for a M17x R2, max you would want to put in is a 780m because its possible that the 880m won't work due to drivers and vbios, It hasn't been out long enough for anyone to really do anything with it. the 780m by itself should perform in games similar or better than 7970's and its also just 1 card so instead of 2 100w cards your running 1 100w card so ability to overclock is available at that point.

Well, if the performance of a single 7970m is similar to a single 780m, then there is no reason for me to do the upgrade (since i already have a 7970m working on my rig).

If i am going to upgrade i am looking at least for a 30% performance increase, that is why i thought the 880m would be a good option. Also, Eurocom does say that they will run on an m17xr2... so that is what i was going for as far as it working on my machine.. but if its true that they dont run on the r2, i would love to get info on that before i go down a very deep hole :)

I guess i have to contact Eurocom to verify, because they assured me the m17xr2 could run either 780ms or 880m. Their ebay listings for both even state the required bios and such for it to work.. no i am confused :(

They told me the same thing also but I followed the forums advice and got a 680M for the M17X R2. Upgraded from a single AMD 5870M card and performance increase is night and day.

So far the 780M has been confirmed that it doesn't work in the M17X R2. Maybe the 880M might work but highly doubt it. Hope someone can be the guinea pig and try running the 880M on the M17X R2. hehe

It's better to stay as you are right now, the performance increase will not be much.

Ok. Ill ponder some more on this. I thought the 880m would be a big leap from 7970m... but if it isnt, then whats the point :(

    Thanks for the info

A single 880m should be almost as fast as crossfire 7970m. Dual 880m especially overclocked will totally annihilate it.

That is what I am expecting. In that case I might be willing to play guinea pig :)

Not to mention, that if it works, i bet others would probably give the mod a try :)

One last thing, Erocom has assured me that the card 880m will work on an m17xr2, as does the 780m. The person i spoke with did mention that he also did see the threads online about it not being compatible, but he stated that his technicians assured him they work. Anyways, ill keep you psoted if I end up buying the card (thats another can of worms altogether)

That isn't true, who said this? The 680M is slightly better than the 7970M. The 780M is about 20% better than the 680M. And the 880M is about 7%-10% better than the 780M.

Well the person that sold em the 7970 arranged to get a replacement from dell, so i guess im back to option one (which honestly, if it works, its my ideal case). This time i am going to get a new xfire cable, to eliminate any potential culprits in the bad card situation. ill also install the new card alone as primary first, and use it for a while. Then ill install the second one (in this case my regular card) and pray for the better.
