AS it was already said, I would spend max. $2000. Have done this mistake (buying a expensive laptop) before. After one year, I could get the same thing for almost half of the price..

Why have you spec'd in the SSD's and RAM?? Get the lowest ram and hdd they offer and upgrade yourself for 1/2 the price!

This is what you should be looking at:

-2670QM...install that XM yourself if you are a bencher, really no performance gain over a lets say 2760QM even the 2670QM is more then enough for games.

-4 GB RAM, upgrade yourself later.
-Stock HDD, upgrade to SSD yourself.
-3D screen if you are into 3D...had it myself liked it but not loved it, image with 3D on is too dark.

    -Blue ray.
    -Killer wifi for gaming.
-The vizio thiny if you need it.
    -Office 2010.
    -Warrenty is up to you.

Everything installed by HID is not covered by the Dell warrenty. If you live in the US get it from Dell, If you live outside the US get it from HID or similar company. If you live outside US also think about shipping costs and taxes.

    5 grand on a laptop ? lol

unless your looking to have the best score on benches the 2500 dollars extra dont realy give u anything extra on games.

3d is all fine and dandy and prolly works allright now but in the very near future in order to run something 3d u have to turn off all the eyecandy to just have the 3d effect.

If u realy want 3d gaming get a good desktop or wait till the m18x comes with it as 2 gtx 580 will prolly do u a fair bit longer for 3d. 3d gaming on laptops are a bit of a gimmic and cards in the laptop dont realy have the processing power to run high end games on maximum settings at top fps let alone run them in 3d as it cuts the fps in half.

ram and hdd are best to upgrade aftermarket as its cheaper.

if your just looking 3d for movies then go for it but it will be pointless feature for the newer generation games.

if your looking to spend 5 grand on a laptop ur prolly better off going for the m18x and get yourself some nice dual gfx.

Regarding Dell HDDs and upgrading on your own, you may want to consider this and compare prices... HDD prices skyrocketting!

if you're gonna spend $5K...i'd look at M18x and get dual graphic cards and even then, i don't think the price tag will come out to $5k

As a rule of thumb, you generally want to install the expensive ram and SSD's after you get the laptop because it will save you some money. As long as the price is reasonable where you are getting your laptop for these items, i would do those myself.

if you are a gamer...2760 is more than enough. I'd upgrade the CPU later and save a ton of cash that way

No 5k is too much for a computer when the parts will come down so dramatically.

Instead of spending 5k now, and hoping it lasts 5 years.

spend 2k on a laptop, then 2k again in 3 years time.

you save 1000 and get an extra year....

This was my first and only thought.

Spend that $5k, then weep when the new GPUs come out in early 2012 and obsolete your decision. We're way too close to a major refresh to be dropping that kind of coin.

the only thing I would say - I picked up my lappy for an absolute steal and upgraded some of the components myself, as indeed others have indicated.

I just wanted to chip in by saying 3D is utter pish unless its on a 100"+ screen. Seriously the sense of depth on a 17" would be utterly pointless and on top of that you'd be wasting the GPU's performance, when you'd be better off sticking it into effects etc.

    Just my opinion.

Just to put things into perspective...

My m17x R3 (listed in sig) without SSD and 8 gigs of ram cost me $1875 canadian shipped (after discount)

    My upgrades since:
    Crucial M4 128 gig: $179 shipped
    2x4gig Gskill DDR3 -1333: $45
SB X-fi: Free (already had it)
Soon: Core i7 2820 from ShirleyFu: $270 shipped

    I'm no where near $5k

My next upgrade will be either an AMD 7800's or 7900's series vid card...probably 7900's as my 6990m is still decent

For $5k, I would rather buy a golden business-class laptop, maybe with some diamonds on it. It will suit best with my Rolex, to use inside my Maybach.

At least the gold/diamonds part retains its value.

It is not a good value the way you have it configured.

Do you have any or will this put you in debt?

What is your net worth? Retorical. Perhaps this is a weeks pay for some?

Would the money be better spent on yourself or family?

Would this laptop be productive for work or just play?

My laptop in my sig was less than $1800 cert. refurb and looks, smells and runs like brand new. Major Value!

    You can really get a better deal - $5000 for a laptop...wow.

I pick up the following for less than $2500 from outlet:

    Alienware M17x R3 Laptop
Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
    Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate
    2860QM 2.5GHz
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M
    16 GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4X4GB)
    Internal 60GHz WirelessHD Transmitter
    Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO
320 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
320 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
    17.3 inch Wide FHD (1920 x 1080 60Hz) WLED Display

    and...

3 year warranty and complete care.

It had some minor issues which I took care of in under 10 minutes, other wise it seems to be ok.

Upgrading is easy, remove a couple of screws and you have access to the RAM and HDD bays. If you are looking for a SSD the Crucial M4 is doing very well here. RAM is so cheap aftermarket. Since you want a 3D system faster RAM doesnt really matter since you cant use the IGP. IGP benefits the most from faster RAM. Kingston Hyper X is a name that pops up very often.

Do you live outside the US?

If you really want to spend 5k, why not go for M18x ?

Try the config below. You can save more than 1k by buying separate RAM, RAID SSD, (maybe the 2960XM as well if you feel comfortable upgrading yourself) and spend those on the extended warranty. Final price should be close to 5k.

And this to go with ur beast:

How is it even possible? If you maxed out everything except for hard drive and memory and purchased memory, TWO 512GBSSD and 2960xm RETAIL elsewhere it probably would still be less than that.

Mine was less than $3k even with 16GB, SSD and XM CPU upgrades. It would take effort to get there with M17x but fairly easy with M18x.

ebay is your friend for CPU's...for example, ShirleyFU is the best CPU seller on Ebay. They ship to Australia. Just bought a i7 2820 from Shirley for $270 shipped

Bought 8 gigs of ram from the local computer store for $45
Bought my M4 SSD on sale for $179 shipped

You're starting to see the picture now. Those upgrades would have cost me $1200 if i went through dell

AND when the time comes, the next gen AMD vid card is going into my computer...either 7800's or 7900's...probably 7900's as my 6990m is still decent

Without even having read a single post in this entire thread I would like to say:

I dont know if it would EVER be worth it to spend 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS on any laptop computer...ever. Seriously. I mean does it turn into a hot chick and fulfil your every fantasy? No? Just plays video games really fast you say? Yeah...not worth 5k.

People have upgraded the CPU's and the GPU's in R1's in this forum...just search it or look at the top 10 threads they are almost always about similar topics. But I wonder if the cost and work of upgrading an r1 is worth it...cant you just buy an r3 for not alot more money and have the warrenty and such??

Think the R2 motherboard fits the R1.

It does but the middle magnesium plate isn't the same for both models!!
I also didn't test if the sound cards are compatible, they do fit and plug though.

    3D on a gaming laptop = No.Maybe in 5 years or so.
3D on a gaming desktop = Probably yes. It's great and all but it's not all that amazing.

id go with the first setup if you want the best performance you can get at this point in time. My biggest advice would be to go with the stock RAM and HD and Upgrade these aftermarket because it will be way cheaper and you will have more of a selection :)
