    Hi guys.

My first post! Hope somebody here can help me.

I just purchased a Reconditioned Alienware M17xR3. There was no mention of it being 3D capable but on the bottom there is a Nvidia 3D Vision sticker. It has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and the Refresh Rate goes up to 120Hz. Is there a way to confirm it is 3D before I purchase 3D glasses?

Also, could the IR emitter be built into it or would I have to purchase one? Any advice on purchasing glasses?

    Thanx for looking.

not sure how to activate the 3d (never had a system with it) , but if the refresh rate goes up to 120Hz it should be capable of 3d. :)

yes you have the 3d screen and the emitter is built in. all you need to do is get some glasses and some 3d content and you are good to go.

to enable the 3d just open up nvidia control panel and click on the little box that says "enable stereoscopic 3d"

If you got it from Dell call them and let them send you the glasses.

Yes agree with the other posters, looks like you got an 'extra'!

Not much chance of getting the glasses if it was sold as a non-3d model but still a bit naughty so worth asking.

If you see the 'Stereoscopic 3D' sub-tree in the nvidia control panel then the emmter is detected. Worth checking just in case this was the original problem with it, before you splash out on some glasses.

I can confirm that either the original or the V2 glasses work fine so search for either if you want to give it a go.

I have a 3d laptop and am pretty sure the emmiter should be on the bottom left of the screen, looking like a dark square, below the screen.

    Thanx for the help guys.

I do have the Stereoscopic sub tree in the Nvidia control panel.

And I can make out a tiny rectangle in the bottom left of the screen.

    So I'm very happy.

Are there 3rd Party 3D glasses that can be used with the Nvidia products or do you have to purchase the official glasses?

    Thanx again.

Had a look at that and I don't believe they are going to work with the internal display - 3D TV is a different format.

You (and anyone with an Nvidia card) can use an external 3D TV and the glasses that come with it using a piece of software from Nvidia called 3D TV Play. They sell it but according to the Nvidia documentation the licence is free for people that have already purchased 3d Vision, and from what I read it is part of the driver. If I check 'licenses' in the driver CP I see it is there but no idea how to activate it - but I don't have a 3d TV to try it (it might not work over HDMI anyway and you are restricted to 720p resolution I believe)

There is a 3D subforum here so it might be an idea to start a new post there, I'm sure there are experts that can better advise :)

I ebayed a second set but too embarrassed to say what I paid, impulse purchase, 'I want it and I want it now'
