So long story short, I need to know if a i7-3840QM cpu is compatible with an R3 motherboard.

I have an R4 but I think its possible I have an R3 motherboard since I only received and R4 as a replacement for a defective R3 that customer service could not fix. A replacement that held all the previous R3 specs. So I think that might have included the motherboard. On top of that, years ago I had a technician come over and replace the motherboard itself to solve a few issues. I think he might've brought in a R3 motherboard since that was what I initially bought and what is registered on my dell account. It's the only explanation I have for a problem I posted in another thread where I'm getting a black screen with 7 beeps of death after swapping to this cpu AND back to my old cpu, so here's hoping I get some answers on why my motherboard is apparently bricked now. I don't know how much these motherboards actually differ but I'm dying for answers here.

Nope, the r3 board, which is about to be the same generation platform as the m18x r1 board with minor differences, is not compatible with the 3rd gen. Intel mobile CPUs, aka Ivy Bridge.

It is just compatible with the 2nd gen, aka Sandy Bridge.

Have you checked that the pins on the CPU aren't bent? Hold it from the side and look along the rows from each side, it's easier to see a bent pin than from looking down on the CPU. If one pin is bent it can cause your issue and the exact same thing happened to someone I was helping with another R4 over the past few days.

Looked fine from what I saw. Either that or one of them was bent so slightly that I didn't notice but it still met the threshold for error. I've since just decided to buy another cpu and motherboard while returning this one for a refund.
