Since I got my defective 7970m replaced and the same problem still hasn't got fixed, I'm planning to switch to a 680m when this card fail me again. But I want to get some further information before that:
1, If I call dell to upgrade my card, will they buy back my old 7970m(even if it's not working)? And will the upgrade affect my warranty?
2, Someone here said 680m has a dynamic GPU boosting now with A05 BIOS but others don't, I want to know if overclocking a 680m is the same as 7970m? Fixed clock and vBIOS flashable?
3, How's the temperature of 680m in m17r4? Any better than 7970m?
Thanks for your reply. Anyway, hope my 7970 just refuse to break down![]()

1. Not a clue. If it is defective, you may be able to negotiate upgrading to the 680m. They probably will charge you the difference. Then again, they may never upgrade you at all.
2. After bios A05, overclocking is allowed and from what I know, the GPU is working as it should be.
3. From what I have seen, the GTX 680m runs nice and cool but when I owned the 7970m, it was cool as well. All I know is that the GTX 680m OC'd passed 1Ghz still keeps reasonable temps.
After I receive my M17x R4, I should be able to verify all of this -
My 7970m is running nice and cool no matter which game I play. Crysis 2, Eve Online, WoW, SC2, Diablo 3, Deus ex: HR and BF3. Not a single issue so far. As for the 680m, they may let you upgrade but I am not sure. Outright I believe they are charging like $1000 for the 680m last I heard so hope you can get it upgraded lol

Alienware-L_Porras Company Representative
1. Probably not.
2.Yes you can overclock it.
3. It's tested to run on very good temps and should work with no problem after applying the correct thermal paste and making sure you have a good environment for it. -
Now I fully reinstalled windows and drivers which used to buy me several days time but not this time, flickers are still there with no sign of getting better. Does anyone know how much does Dell sell for their 680m? Hope it doesn't exceed too much above 1000d cause it's my limit

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
probably will be $1200
like the 580m used to be. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens to be sure though.

Why not get your card replaced again, or perhaps it's not your card that is causing your issue? Why not use your warranty to the fullest instead of throwing your money away? Perhaps you'll be able to get an exchange for a 680M if they can't resolve your problem with the 7970M.

If it's failing again demand a new system, there is a reasonable limit of repairs, if problem cannot be solved ask for new system because you lose faith that dell cannot solve it...
then you can get an upgrade to 680M if you pay extra. -
Now I fell I shall take another try this afternoon, hope they will send me another technician. (last time after they replaced my first card and failed unigine heaven the technician told me the problem is too minor and they might not be willing to give me a second replacement.) -
You could look up to Eurocom Corporation - Number 1 in Desktop Replacement Notebook Technology or asks their sales rep. or eBay for a replacement GTX 680M with a warranty.

It would be much better if you get your 7970M replaced by Dell(maybe you can even get a rebate!) -

Thats the mysterious GTX 680M (GTX 680M A1) that was rumored to come instead of the 680M (GTX 680M A2) we have now.
I think it scored P4900 in 3DMark11 when the chinese community got their hands on a engineering sample.
I guess Eurocom is too lazy to remove it from their list -
I would still go for the 1344 cores GTX 680M, why compromise?
Is dell selling their 680m now?
