I like to sit on this couch with the mouse pad and mouse on the arm of it. I position one knee under the HD and leave the CPU/GPU vents completely free. With that, my temps are always CPU: 70ish under load while gaming and 60-70 on the GPUs. I feel it is better than having it on a cooler or table as it gets full breathing room under the system (minus the knee where the HD is located. Seem OK to do so? I know it's a "no no" and was wondering if I am not seeing something that I should with this positioning. Thanks.

Just order a lapdesk from one of the many sellers online or at a local office store. The lapdesk will provide a smooth/level/hard surface which will prevent blocking the fan intakes. They can be had for under 30 bucks. Cheap investment if you are going to be sitting in bed or on the couch with your system.

In addition to what BatBoy has said, yes that's a huge no no with systems like these. On the other hand, if you've found a way to keep the vents unobstructed, there shouldn't be an issue. It will just be much easier to keep them unobstructed with some kind of laptop desk. I use the one Targus makes. It doesn't provide any external cooling though, it's just a lap desk sort of thing.

ya like i said only the harddrive on the right side next to the gpu is balanced with my other knee holding the left side outside of the gpu. It's actually very comfortable and temps are very low. Was more wondering if the heat from the knee would impact the HD at all. The CPU and GPU's are fine.

Hi Dave, i do this all the time (sit on the couch and use my notebook on my lap) have had no problems with that so far. (i have done this for the past 6 weeks now) the only this i would like to mention is that the machine temps do get a bit warmer then placing the machine on a table but not something to worry about (i estimate the difference is about 5 degrees celsius) one thing i do want to urge you to look at is: leave the power supply on some hard surface (so do not leave it on the armrest of a couch or some other 'furry' surface. (i hope you get what i mean, i am dutch you know ;) because the power supply tends to get quite warm that way!

Although I can't really advise it, it should be safe if you're careful. With my older M17, I can position my legs so the vents are completely unblocked. In fact, cooling improves like that, presumably because there's no desk under it.

However, a lapdesk really is the best solution if you can get one. Not to mention positioning your legs under the HDD could also cause additional heating in the HDD, possibly to dangerous levels.

Can you actually sit for more than 1/2 hour with an M17x R2 on your lap without being crushed beneath the beast? I know all about it. I tried ;)

Hmmm. I've pulled 12 hour gaming sessions on my couch with my R2 on my lap. I'm 6'-1" and 230lbs though. I guess it depends on your stature. It's by far the heaviest laptop I've ever owned, but it doesn't cause me any discomfort. Get whatever is going to maximize your experience.

I have used my m1710, m1730 and m17x on my lap; keeping the vents unobstructed.
for the computer it is fine, for you it is not,
i got myself a case of toasted skin syndrome, so now I use a logitech n700 lapdesk, which i can recommend, its sturdy, comfortable, the cooling is weak, but it keeps the notebook from reving up too much and the speakers are better than the ones in the m17x. I should have bought this five years ago ...

EDIT: if you want children later; don't heat up your crotch area, so be carefull

Watch out the heat as it can easily damage your sperms productivity..!!!
Just an advice so you won't regret putting it on your legs ...

I just love that quote from the other linked thread on the previous page.......personally, cant say heat has affected my "lil fella's" production....maybe they like added warmth LMAO!

I use it on my lap all the time. I find that the gap between the gpu vent and the cpu vent on the underside provide nice channels to support it on my knees/thighs. As a result there's plenty of air flow and the laptop is supported really well.

UGH. This is one of the worst cases of misinformation going on about laptops. it all stems from the study done on whether or not the minuscule radiation occasionally leaked by some laptops can reduce sperm count.

It turns out it can . . . . but only when you aren't wearing any pants or boxers and the laptop is position directly on top of your . . . well. . . gentleman's area . . . will there be any effect. And even then the effect is nearly nothing.

It's not the heat that affects the sperm count - its the small amount of radiation sometimes leaked by some laptops - and the study found that just even wearing only boxers let alone full on pants is more than enough to shield you from it. And I would argue that the combination of Magnesium innards and Aluminum casing of a M17x will be sufficient in blocking any emitted radiation - so most likely this isn't even an issue with AW laptops.

People need to let this drop. Idk about you, but I sure don't position my laptop directly on my gentleman's area when I'm fully naked and boot up a game of Crysis. Do you? If you don't then there's nothing to worry about at all.
