so, im thinking on ordering Alienware 17 r4 with gtx 1080. Im wondering if i should wait for the Volta nvidia cards refresh, or that will take some more time?

I wouldn't recommend that laptop. You can get far better performance, upgradeable hardware and better cooling for the money. Since they are all BGA now the only real advantage of Alienware is build quality.Papusan, sicily428, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this.

So basically ur saying i should build a PC instead?
It crossed my mind, i have an imac, but guess i can keep my macbook, not buy an alienware 17 and get a PC
Unless someone else here will say i should get the alienware 17Arrrrbol likes this. -
1. Wrong place to ask
2. I don’t recommend any gaming laptops any longer. Better to get something for light usage and a desktop for gaming. Alienware laptops are not recommended by my any longer since they switched to soldered computers in 2015 -
Everything after 2015 and forward has had serious QC issues

The First AW BGA models started with a Big bang... 799MHz Throttle-gate right out of the box. 180W power adapter and 980M. Then a half baked fix with the well known Hybrid Battery Boost ala MSI. Domed before it was born.

Agree with this, but I take it a step further and say that no gaming laptops are recommended. I do not limit the advice to Alienware. They all have issues unless you resort to hardware and/or firmware mods. Nothing is worth a damn as shipped from the factory now. If you must purchase an expensive high performance laptop, then get a Clevo P870 from HIDevolution and it will have Prema firmware. That's the only one I recommend to anyone, but I don't even recommend that if it comes with stock firmware and no special TLC from HID. If you want to save a few bucks, get it with a single GTX 1080 and the massive vapor chamber designed for SLI and the single 1080 will run as cool as a cucumber.

I agree with the other posters. What i'd suggest is building a proper desktop for gaming (or buy one from a reputable system builder if its cheaper with the current GPU prices). If you need to game on the go, you can upgrade the M18X you have in your signature. Most gaming laptops now are just mid range crap with poor build quality and a fat price tag because they have some flashing lights on them.

Thank you all for the tips.

Take a look on P870 series if you still want a laptop... http://www.hidevolution.com/new-laptops/gaming-laptops/evoc-clevo/17-inch-gaming-laptops
Is it a good time to buy an Alienware 17 R4 ?
