    Hi guys,

Currently Dell Owes me a Blu Ray Burner which they were suppose to configure with the Alienware M17x R2.

However they have been unable to get me one thus far due to unavailability. Reliable Executives working on this have been told by part providers that the Slot Load burner is no more in production. Even the execs are very surprised with this. Anyway we also know its not available on any system EXCEPT Dell Precision 6500 and Dell XPS 14 which come with Tray Load type or BD Burner.

I have also been given the choice of getting a Buffalo BD Burner - BR-X816U2 : External 8x Blu-ray® Drive.

It is however a Desktop Burner which is slim packed but requires its own power supply. It connects using USB 2.0

I am also considering getting the component BD- Burner which is in the Optical drive of Dell Precision or Dell XPS 14 to convert it by placing the componet into an external slim portable Optical Driver Casing. IS THIS FEASIBLE? AND A GOOD MOVE?

Pls give me your suggestions. Thank you

Get whatever costs the least for you to do. If they will pay for the whole thing, then get whatever they can offer you + something else to compensate for the whole shenanigans ;)

Feasible YES with a USB powered(no need for another power supply) enclosure that costs ~6$ and instead of the optical unit that you currently have place another enclosure that can hold a HDD(1Tb for data storage) if you don't use the drive that much and don't mind having it USB plugged ;)

A good move: only you can tell. Can't you get like a refund and buy yourself a slot load BD burner elsewhere?

Refund option is there, but i am stuck in India at least for a year. I am studying here wherelse the system was originally purchased in Malaysia. So its a long winded process. And the money is only returned to the credit card or name of person who made the payment. Also if I buy on my own, I wont get a 3 year warranty assurance.

I currently have a BD rom in my system, that would remain untouched. But I figured if I could convert the one I am getting, I could have the flexibility to use on any system I wish. I dont always have to depend on the Incredible Hulking R2.

Well I am just weighing the pros and cons. Another matter is, the speed on slot load Blu ray burning is very slow.

I converted my blu-ray burner to an external. I have it linked in my sig, under the 1TB drive conversion I believe. I made the BR burner an external and put a 1TB in it's place for additional storage. :D

go and get refund from dell and get a uj-235(slot load bluburner on ebay and install it yourself) it shoud cost alot less than what dell was charging you, The drive costs around $150, then install it youself or go to a computer shop and have them install it.
