I know it's possible on the 18 inch versions but was wondering if it's possible to add a second graphics card on the 17inch ones too? I'd be looking to upgrade to 2 x 7970M if it's possible to do.

The answer to your question is NO. Only the m17xR2 had 2 graphic slots and it can be modded to use 'Newer' dual cards in crossfirex / SLi. From the m17xR3 onwards there is only one GPU that can be added / changed / upgraded.

As stated above, the M17x since the R3 dropped the dual MXM slots and the 17" version became the budget top end laptop and the M18x/Alienware 18 is the new flagship Alienware laptop.

Sell your 17 and pick up the M18x r2 from the outlet. This last week they had 25% off dell outlet and you could have picked up an awesome deal on the M18x r2 and the new Alienware 14. Keep an eye out and you can get some really nice deals at the outlet and stack that with the $75 promo gift card with $400 gift card purchase.

Thanks for the info however I'm from the UK and would be really high custom fees. I'm actually looking at the M18x R2 as well.. can get a refurbished one for the same price as the M17x I was looking at minus the SSD which is a shame however the ability to add a secondary graphics card more than makes up for it.

SSD can always be added later but having the capability for SLI/crossfire is not a feature than many laptops have at this time. You could always use a mail forwarding service and as long as you claim no insurance / value you should be able to skip out on custom fees. If you are able to find something local to you then I would consider that as well since risk is much lower. Sometimes you can find really good deals in the outlet and forward the package to your self.
