    Hey guys,

I have just received Alienware m17x R4 with Radeon 7970m yesterday and I can't believe how nice all the games look with it! But I'm a bit concerned about the fan noise this laptop keeps making. Even when I'm playing games that aren't so demanding in power (Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2) it randomly makes loud fan noises. Both CPU and GPU temperatures are between 50C-60C at idle. It stays around 60C for GPU when playing games. So is it normal for temperatures and is it normal for my fans to be kind of loud? I need to give this away as a gift soon and I want to make sure everything is okay.

Edit: Seeing from other threads, my temperature seems to be okay. But should my fans still be making loud noises?

Yes it is very loud, especially when under load, I noticed it gets hot as well. Get yourself a chill mat, I love the one I got from Dell, its adjustable and has 3 fans and runs off 2 usb's. Oh and if you didn't get the Orion backpack I suggest you order one immediately, its probably the best backpack I have ever seen, there is slots for everything. I can fit my chill pad, laptop, charger, mouse, keyboard, mouse pad, slots for memory card storage. Its just great.

Hey thanks for your suggestions. Could you tell me which chill mat you are talking about? I have some dell credits from this purchase and I may as well use it to get a chill pad from them if they have a good one.

Yes loud fans are normal when under load and gaming. Some games seem to cause this more then others. The Orion messanger bag is also really cool, my wife just got one for me and its very nice, very high quality.

You just can't have silent fans with this kind of hardware. :)

Guys, this is like buying a Mustang GT with 420+ hp and then complaining about the engine noise lol

unfortunately, these laptops generate heat and the fans are audible underload.

You guys should also raise the back of your laptops up...you will see references to the "book" mod or "bottlecap" mod lol etc... This allows the bottom fan intakes to suck in air unobstructed and you will see a 5-10c drop in temps and may help with the fan noise

    bottlecap method:

I've never owned such a beast before so I was a bit caught off guard. It's fine as long as I know its normal haha.

Ancientbarb, invest in a decent set of headphones lol...you won't hear the fans during a game when those things are on :D

I re-pasted my CPU/GPU because I was getting tired of my fan spinning up and down constantly.

Diablo 3 is actually quite demanding and the fan should be spinning at medium speed with the back elevated and my CPU/GPU re-pasted I don't hear it all with no headphones on.

Everything in Diablo 3 is 3D rendered, even the backgrounds and depth of field stuff is all rendered in 3D and using your GPU, add 4 players and an infinite amount of monsters on screen and it can get quite demanding. When I'm getting swarmed with dozens of monsters my fan goes a little higher and once I'm done killing them all off it spins right down.

With any other game the fans barely hit high ever.

I highly recommend re-pasting if you can. I found that my CPU/GPU had far too thick of a thermal compound from the factory and some of the screws even, were loose, so there wasn't a good even contact point.
