Hey guys, I'm looking for some quick feedback on my 580m overclock. I've got an M17x R3 w/ nvidia 296.10 drivers. According to MSI Afterburner, my core clock defaults at 620 mhz ... I've been playing around with clock speeds (800 mhz produces insane artifacts and crashes my GPU... it wasn't pretty) but I have been able to get it to 700 mhz and it goes through the Heaven benchmark without throttling.
My temperatures, expectedly so, have gone up... I ran Diablo 3 for a good 15-30 minutes and my temperatures hovered around 70-71c ... I tested a bunch of games, at various points, and didn't encounter any lockups or throttling, but my temperatures are much higher.
I'm a little confused, I was under the impression that my 580m would start throttling at 66c ... I've checked in both Afterburner, HWINFO, and this desktop widget I have... my temperatures while gaming are hovering at 70-71 and I don't seem to have any visible issues.
I guess my question is... is a 700 mhz overclock decent for a 580m? Should I push it further? What core clock are you guys getting your 580m to?

I flashed my 580M's vbios to 700/825(1650) months ago and now use it as my default clocks; I overclock to 750/850(1700) if I want a little more zip, all using stock voltage of .87v. Temps at 700/825 are identical to stock settings (620/750), and only increase 1-2C at 750/850. I can also handle 775/875 at .87v, but much above that I have to switch to .92v. I don't have Diablo3, and it's hard to compare gaming temps generally without considering other settings, ambient temps, laptop fan control, etc. With the revised heat sink, my temps rarely exceed 70C, and never more than 75C, even at high overclocks. 3dMark11 has max GPU temps of 60C+/- and Vantage 63C+/- at 700/825 or 750/850. Haven't seen any throttling in months. Currently using 296.10 as well.

have you overclocked your video memory at all? or is it best to leave that alone do you think?

Yes, the second number is the VRAM setting, i.e., with 700/825, the 825 is the video ram (sometimes reported as 1650 (AfterBurner, Nvidia Inspector), sometimes 825 (GPU-Z, HWINFO64), depending on the utility). I tend to reduce the differential between core and memory settings as the clocks increase because Nvidia memory adds heat fast, particularly at .92v. Cards vary though, YMMV.

im pretty amateur at overclocking. can anyone tell me why there are artifacts at higher overclocks?
-
What would you recommend overclocking my memory to if it's defaulting at 1500 on after burner?

well ii overclock my 580m at 850MHz/1900MHz and i dont have problems
For the TEmperature Probelms You can use the Program Called HWiNFO64 -

With most 580M's you'll need to increase voltage to .92v to support a core clock at or above 800. Widezu69 included a modified vbios at .92v, as well as the P1=P0 mod, in his throttling thread. However, be aware that 850/1900 is a very aggressive overclock, really a benching overclock, so watch temps carefully if you implement those settings and avoid Furmark completely.

incluiding the Widezu69 tell me that he always the 24/7 (example of time) he use the same clocks with no problems
Is my 580m overclock good?
