Unless i'm doing something wrong i have to have the graphics rendering down to it's lowest at 50% for any smoothness at all? Is this right? Is the 980m that much better? The game in question is Call of Duty Black ops 3

Welcome to the new PC gaming age where companies just make ****ty ports for PC and never update them or fix them.

Even games that are custom-designed for the PC often suffer from piss-poor optimization.

I play Heroes of the Storm, and given its graphical requirements, it should run MUCH better than it does. And this is a game by Blizzard, which pretty much only does PC gaming.

    Devs are getting lazy.

You have to remember , Blizzard has gone to **** ever since they were bought by Activision so unfortunately it isn't really their fault. Activision just had to sink their claws in to get a piece of the WoW pie. Is it any wonder their sub base has lost over 50% of their subs and D3 has needed years to recover from it's disastrous launch. Blizzard used to be a company that you knew when they launched a game it was going to be good....sadly that isn't the case any more.

to be honest the 780m is a great card, its like what everyone else has said, its all down to optimization from the Dev's. The main team seem to develop the console version and pass it to another team to do a ****ty pc version. Its not in all cases, but its getting worse.

Thanks to the thegh0sts i now have the correct driver 359.99, and black ops 3 is smooth as silk on my 980m running at around 92fps @ 1080p 120hz screen. Looks amazing.

I've even thought of selling my AW17 and getting a console, as the technology gap for what i can afford is getting closer all the time. i couldn't get a desktop due to space either as i could afford a much better spec system with the money i have spent.

Well to be honest, more and more games are being developed for consoles first, then ported.

Unless there are specific games you play that are only available on a PC (or are just plain better on a PC), there isn't much reason for PC gaming anymore. A $400 PS4 will run games smoothly for 5+ years, while $400 will, at most, get you a current-gen GPU. Console games can look good, even on inferior console hardware, because they're developed with a very specific (and constant) set of hardware, so console devs know exactly what they have to work with, and can fully optimize it.

I've also decided to just build a desktop, as I've gone through so many different laptops in the past year, none of which were satisfactory. Only a desktop lets you build a machine tailored exactly to your needs and wants. Not to mention the $$$ savings from building a desktop. With a laptop, even if money is of no concern, there are still concessions that need to be made (size, heat, noise, keyboard quality, screen size/quality, etc.). Not so with a desktop.

I mean, I managed to find a GTX 970 for around $350 CAD, while a GTX 980M would be less powerful and cost closer to $900.

Now I'm probably just going to see if I can find a relatively cheap, used gaming laptop for the occasional bout when I can't use my desktop. Maybe find a used AW18 for $1200 CAD or so.
